Fooked air filter

Was stripping the front end of my Dad's Disco today so I can weld up the shagged inner arches, pulled the air box and found this....

obviously someone who doesnt do regular maintenance

Certainly seems that way.

Frick not seen that before, from a relative novice to mechanic's (well before I owned Landy's) .... what would cause that to happen?

Can't swear on this section but, you know damn well what I'd tell ya

Fortunately it seems like he got away with it, there's traces of mulch in the induction pipework but the turbo shaft has minimal play.

There is a horrid rattling/knocking noise that goes away at higher RPM, but I'm confident that's a shagged timing belt tensioner, since it's also been off-road without any wading plugs.
