Fly-wheel / clutch !!!help

Could anybody tell me if it is normal that there is approx 1cm of play (side to side) between the drive plate and the fly wheel ?? if not wot we talking to sort it out........... thanks in advance.:confused:
 
i thought the clutch housing clamped the drive plate to the friction surface on the fly wheel hence the need to centre the drive plate before nipping the clutch assy fully and assembling on the G/B spline?

if thats the case then you prolly wont get the g/b on easily if at all and probably no clutch when its all back together!

is everything the correct part and on the correct way? also check the clutch assy is free from defect. the spring steel from the friction plate and the housing can be weal or broken. check the fingers are tight and there is no play in the housing. check the friction plate centre is solid to the friction surface.

i used to work at LUK who manufacture clutches for most car manufacturers and the ones that go to motor factors dont meet the tolerances for the manufacturers and autherised dealers etc. the spring steel has been known not to be hardened properly and parts not be fully pressed or pressed incorrectly and become loose!

i'm certain there is a problem but never done a landy clutch so cant say from experience!

No that is not right. The friction plate should be clamped to the flywheel by the pressure plate.

Picutres would help as would a location....if there is someone local they could pop round and take a look :)
 
hi gavbriggs tyvm4 the reply....i thinkmaybe i need to clarify .the movement i have is the same sense as a pendulum (side to side ) my mate ! (normally the one wiv de brain ) believes that the drive plate (attatched to the fly wheel ) should not move independently of the fly wheel which is not the case at the moment ?
 
all the engine side should be solid. there should be no lateral movement as this will cause vibration and possibly catasrophic damage!

everything you got out of the box marked clutch assy(or whatever it is marked and there may be several boxes) from the motor facters bolts on to the engine side and once bolted up should be solid. you wont be able to move anything without excessive force!!!

ideally we need pics or a location to see what the crack is as there seems to be something loose!

by drive plate do you mean the friction surface that is attached to the flywheel?
 
just looking through rave cd and i noticed that you are supposed to remove the bolts that secure what they call the flywheel/drive plate and put new ones in if you remove it. could this be where the movement is? i assume they are stretch bolts and require replacing after removal but could have worn or been overtightened!!

have you got rave cd?

hi will arrange some pics if poss 4 tonite ..........as for the location got a problem there i live approx 30kms north of Grenoble inthe French Alpes .......... But of course if anybody is passing ha !ha !

ok rave cd is basically the haynes manual for the landrover. it has all the torque values etc and diagrams.

check to see what is moving from what, we need to know whats loose and from which point. its hard to diagnose without seeing it as you can imagine and as ive never done a lany clutch then unfortunatly i'm working on experience in general but as i said nothing should be loose as this is vibration which will be dangerous when running and needs to be rectified or verified that it is normal!

if you want to download rave cd look for green oval and its on that site. if you just want a pdf file of the rr then i can prolly email it to you!

a detail came to mind i have not mentioned R R P38a 2.5d 1996 with a dual mass flywheel ? could this change the diagnosis:eek:
 
how much play is there? do you know how they work and why there is movement there?
If there is loads then it is most probably fooked, as the springs can weaken or snap and the tabs can deform. I think they are **** and ever since they were introduced they have been a sore point with loads of vehicles.

i would say there is about 1cm of play (radial movement ) i am not an expert and stoopid only wiv wimmin , the principle of the dual mass fly wheel is i s still a mystery ? :(
 
someone will have to back me up on this one because i am not sure. I have held brand new ones to fit a td5 that have that much play in them. I would say it is ok but like i said.
how did it drive before? any noises/clunks?

i will give u the shrt version.... Land rover dealer in France to reset fault on E.A.S. i asked for a quote for various things including a late clutch (at this point no noise) noticed on the way home slight grinding when engaging 1st next few days grew worse .........back 2 garage sorry mate
not our problem!!! but ' an xtra 2grand can fix it :violent: I was a little ****ed at this point ...finally grew into grindy-clunky sound ..........now stuck in my mates garage pondering with a beer of course!!!
