hi just wonderd how hard it is to replace rear discs on my disco:confused:, ive never done then where hub needs to be taken off, can anybody give me a point in right direction cheers joe:)

ive just done mine and the pads, i needed a 52mm socket that i got off ebay for about a tenner but you can (you shouldnt) just use a hammer and small chisel to tap them undone. And i found that by attaching the hub to the removed wheel it was easier to undo the bolts on it. Sometimes the disks will stick to the hub but that can be subtly removed with the help of a big hammer. I think i got mine from devon 4x4 for under 30 squids for the lot. The whole job took about 2 1/2 hours and i wasnt rushing. Just take everything apart and place them methodically in order so when you go to reassemble them there will be no confusion, Thats what i did. hope this helps.

I just ordered a set of rear discs and pads for my Disco 1 today and will be fitting them Thursday or Friday £27.00 plus vat for the discs and Mintex pads from Mailorder4x4. I'll report back after fitting them..

I did mine abou a month ago. Fairly straight forward job, took me about 1 1/2 hrs a side, and I haven't lifted a spanner for at least 10 years.

Have a look at Replacing front brake discs - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum. It's for a front wheel but the rear is essentially the same except drive shafts are a lot longer. I bought new lock washers and drive shaft gaskets as well.

I used mintex pads and discs from Paddocks Discs etc. If you add a few more items to take your order over £50 postage is free.

I just ordered the gaskets and inner seals and locking tab washer from Craddocks, I already have the Discs and Pads. Looking at that tutorial in the link, the only thing I don't have is a 14mm star socket. Are they the same on the rear of 300TDIs?

cheers for info, got them done yesterday, took us about 3 hours, was'nt too hard really, everything seemed to go ok for a change nothing was seized, apart from my hands and feet, its brilliant this snow

I finished fitted the new springs and shocks yesterday, along with the new rear disks. The main problem was that the pistons wouldn't retract fully into the calipers due to corrosion on the end of the piston. Also with the added thickness of the new disk, I had a real nightmare getting the pads in, I did it in the end by "gently" tapping the pads in, and figured they would rub a little for a while but soon free up. I was wrong, they rub a lot! so I have ordered a piston and seals kit for them so will have to strip them back of and rebuild them. Against my better judgment I had to drive the Disco today with the rear brakes binding which wasn't great but had to be done. However 10 miles from home, I suddenly had no brakes!!! a quick check in a car park showed a puddle of brake fluid and a snapped brake line where it joins the caliper. Not a major problem new lines are only £8.00 a pair on ebay, but the driving home with no brakes was a bit hairy.!! :D

Holy crap, slow down with engine then handbrake?? or is there another way??

thats more or less it. I think there is a second circuit that will brake just the frount wheels, but I found that you needed to stand on the pedal for this to work. If you drive carefully you can avoid the use of the brakes altogether obviously you can't do much about idiots in frount :D
