Has anybody ever done this? Is it lawful? I would like a somewhat louder horn for my Defender.

Any ideas where such a thing might be acquired?

Well you need a very large compressor and a scrap locomotive.

The scrap loco can be found at places like CF Booths in Rotherham or EMR Metals based in Warrington.

Although there are not many left now as most old stuff has been scrapped long ago.

I think it's a great idea and would love to see how you do it.

Just a thought, but I know CF Booth are scrapping alot of ex London Underground stuff. So maybe that'll be smaller and need less wind.

I used to know a guy who had one on his car transporter lorry. He just ran it off the air tank i think. It was bloody loud. He used it one day to beep some bird on a push bike, she very nearly fell off.

We used to have a pair of train horns plumbed into the air system on our Scammell Explorer, as well as the high-low joystick valve that gives the familiar train blast.

Probably not legal though :p

Underground trains have a whistle (even the brand new computerised ones).

For a Defender, it would be easier to fit a truck horn with a built in compressor.

There's lots on eBay, and some highly amusing videos on Youtube, of people with US locomotive horns fitted, driving around and scaring the **** out of passers-by

.

Just be careful where you blow them as there are laws in UK that could cause you some real problems :5bbeatdeadhorse5:

That's the one potential ball-ache with it. If you blast someone and inadvertently send them flying dumbfounded off the side of a bridge with a turtle's head sticking out of their backside, there's bound to be some degree of police comeback.

The huge compressor at first seems like a drawback.....until you think about the potential advantages of having a huge compressor at your disposal wherever you happen to be parked. There aren't perhaps that many, but I still like it.

I have actually been thinking about this recently, This would be perfect for when someone cuts you up.

I'm sure if its on a separate circuit you could talk your way out of a bollocking/fine from the police - sorry officer I hit the wrong button!
