Im new to this forum, so hi to everyone!

This might be already covered somewhere in the forum, but i am currently rebuilding an LT77 gearbox into my landy and was wondering what modifications are needed for the mounts and chassis, if there are any?

Any help or leads would be much appreciated!

PS, the old gearbox will be up for sale as well if anyones interested, has a bearmach overdrive on it and all works fine :)

Hi,

Do a Google for Ashcroft Transmissions, somewhere in their Miscellaneous section, 5-speed conversion for Series, but I think the one shown has the long Defender clutch housing. Circa £1000, but I think that is outright purchase .... not sure if new or recon + modified.

Note, you front axle will not stand up to full-time 4x4, so you need a leafer transfer box on back of coiler gearbox.

We phoned up ashcrofts, they stopped doing the kits 8 years ago for the mounting conversion :confused2: which is a bit of a bugger.

As ive range rover axels with CV joints, wont they last in permenent 4x4?

Hi, i did this conversion to my 1970 2a 88" 2 years ago with disco 200tdi and defender LT77 and as far as mounting them i left chassis engine mounts as original but dropped gearbox crossmember down about 1.5" as the LT230 transferbox hangs lower than series box then made new mounts to bolt to the engine and gearbox to drop on chassis mounts, props have to be made up and the middle crossmember(under clutch housing) needs a notch cutting out so front prop clears. i have managed not to cut up my seat box and still have the series front end although it does help having headlights in the wings when it comes to mounting the intercooler, as for the axles if you have got rangie axles with cv's in them you should have no probs.

Just out of interest, why are you fittling an LT77 box? Did you run into problems with the series box blowing up? I've been running my 200Tdi through a SIII gearbox for 3 months without problems. Done some heavy off roading and trailer towing with it too. It's far simpler to use a series box with the 200Tdi.

Cheers Paul, sounds like a plan. I assume its best left for a garage for the cutting and shutting?

The old gearbox isnt a problem and still works, just tired of using an overdrive and its still fairly slow :s
5 gears is more econominal and less agricultural then the s111 box!!

I have a 300 tdi in mine on the standard series box, well its nearly in.
The cvs on the front will be fine with 4x4 full time, ashcrofts do a kit for one of the box's, I think the r380 that converts the diff lock lever into 2wd and 4wd, I think the 4wd also locks the diff, you could use one of these with a standard series front axle, there has been plenty of controversy over this idea.
Good luck with your conversion and lets see some piccies.

Cheers Dr Pepper :D some pics here of the engine. hopefully the gearbox will soon follow!:D

I'm not sure you will notice any difference whatsover to be honest..

Its in the garage, the old girl will soon have a new gearbox with a "quick release" bolt on cross member :D:D

Its finally completed! LT77 defender gearbox is in and working a treat!
Took 3 months but i can say totally worth it.

200Tdi conversion with LT77 gearbox, but keeping the original shape, with a Comfortable top speed of around 85MPH

Thanks for the pics, the engine position looks similar to mine.
That said thats obviously a 200tdi and a swb, as the turbo doesnt smack the chassis, and the rad you have is bolted on to the back of the original series rad cowling.
I made my life hard with my 300 tdi, have a look at this:
http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f6/300-tdi-series-81067-7.html
The rad does fit, but look at the space between the motor and the rad, there is none, piping this up is a tw@t, and might be why I've not been back to it since last summer.

No probs :)

We also have almost no space between the rad and engine, about 12mm or something stupid. So when we get a fan for it, its got to mounted in the front, between intercooler and rad! Tricky stuff lol
Overall though, its been worth it, so far!

Ok then, thats also interesting, if theres 15mm or so that sounds the same as mine, and I thought the 300 was a longer engine than the 200.
I think but not sure that the 200 rad has better connection union positions than the 300 rad I have.

Ah, it was fairly easy plumbing up the rad, like you said the positions of the connections must be different between the 200 and 300 tdi

Hi there. Thinking of doing same to my Series 111. Did U use series transfer box or is Ur series now permanent 4 wheel drive now? IS it true Ashcroft dont do the adaptor for transfer box now? Appreciate any help / advice
