Fitting a reasonable stereo in a 110 CSW?

Hi folks,

Has anyone fitted a decent/resonable stereo in their Defender 110?

The standard offering is poor, to say the least and I'm after something I will take pleasure in listening to.

Don't get me wrong, I do not want big bass, dvd screens etc, I just want 4 to 6 speakers and good sound from a decent head unit.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

The son gave me a fairly good stereo that was out of a Fix It Again Tomorrow. Went straight in and all the plugs etc were the same, think its a blaupunkt or summat. Plays cd's at any rate. Happy daze.

depends how serious you wanna go...

get a decent head unit, and some speakers, and mount them whereever you think you have the space.

I've got a Blaupunkt head unit and 50w per channel quad amp in mine. Got two Pioneer car speakers which fitted into the standard front dash holes and two 10" speakers (no idea what make) mounted into MDF boxes that sit behind the seats and bulkhead.
Gave up trying to play CDs though because they were always skipping and now use my iPod plugged into the aux input.
No skipping, no CDs to scratch or lose, easy to take with me, and more than loud enough. Dont bother on motorways though unless you like your ears to bleed.

Sony headunit with replacement front speakers and 6x9 JVC speakers on a shelf mounted up by the alpine lights/against dog guard.

I also run the MP3 player over CD's. Deff get the output option if you have MP3. or alteast buy one for future use.

I fitted a sony head unit, 10 disc changer, Amp, sub box uprated front dash speakers and a pair of sony 10 x 7 speakers to my old V8 110 csw.

It sounded wicked.

I have a Sony head unit (with mp3 input) plumbed into a pair of expensive-sounding 80W Kenwood speakers which are installed in the rear of my 90, above the back door. The speakers were a left over from when it was used at Edinburgh airport for which it had an air traffic control radio fitted. Despite only having two speakers, the sound quality and volume are excellent especially considering how noisy the land rover is anyway.

In my series 3 I stuck a sony mo3 head unit under the dash and made 2 boxes with a 6x9 in each one just behind the rear bulkhead. Sounds rate and goes pretty loud! Might get a sub!

Looks like I'll be buying some MDF and 6x9's, a decent head unit and we'll see what takes shape.

Your speakers will sound much better with properly designed enclosures and correct positioning.

Most 6x9's i've fitted give their best performance in a sealed enclosure rather than a reflex one. A pair of tweeters on the a pillars will also improve sound quality.

Cheers. I plan on making speaker boxes and having tweeters on the 'A' pillars. I just need to spend some time deciding where I am going to put the rear boxes. I'll probably use some pull-apart plugs in the speaker wire too, so I can remove the speakers easily when I have a load in the back.

I was in Richard Hammonds 110 last week, my god he's got a sound system in that! Think it's got 4 subs in a box in the back and 4 speakers in the front. It did sound quite impressive for a landy!
Not that you want all that mind, a good head unit and some good quality component speakers will be fine i would have thought.

Nice chap - RH. Met him a while back at a TG filming. His system is a tad more than I'm planning on, still, if my Def was going to be just a toy... But it's not, it shall be a day to day beastie as well.

I think I may pop the rear speakers underneath the rear seats on the carpet & use velcro to hold them in place (will this work???!!!) Or I could to the same and put a sub there and mount the 6x9's up high somewhere...hmmm, got me thinking about subs now! LOL.

no he was filming for the new engineering connections series on our off road site. of course as soon as i mentioned land rovers he wouldnt stop talking in between shoots! yes he is a nice chap, hopefully going greenlaning with him in the summer as he knows nobody else local to him to go with!

you with ya v10 him with his tuned up v8, itll be like rally cross

i aint got a v10 but i got a straight 6! the older m5 engine. his cant be that good he stalled it a few times when i was in it! perhaps he's just a bad driver!
