fitting 20" alloys to RR issues?

Hi all, I am thinking of upgrading the alloys on my vogue due to needing 2 tyres on the standard 18s, but when I bought the car the guy said DO NOT fit 20" wheels as it can cause some sort of viabrations through the transmission or something along those lines! I was under the impression that they came from the factory with 20" alloys as an option?

So is anyone able to shed any light on this for me as the last thing I want is to cause problems later down the line.

I understand the hieght may need to be recalibrated with wheel size change but does it then need all four wheel geo check?

Ok so there are no problems with 20" thats good as I think they suit the rr best. Surely fitting 20" with the smaller tyres will account for most of the height difference from the 18" with big tyres? Or are they set to different heights at the factory depending on wheel choice?

20" weren't an option on the early TD6 L322's

As the 20" rim causes vibrations through the car when sat stationery in drive

Tbh I do get a bit of that anyway!? Its a 2003 so I guess mine is one of these with the issues? is there a fix for this?

No fix for this as far as iv heard

I also have 20's on my early td6, I have for used to the noise anyway

Don't think it causes any damage just noise lol

No need to recal on different rims!

Not heard of this vibration issue i'll have to research this as i cant see how diff rims causes vibration at standstill, unless it is diesel knock not being damped by the taller sidewalls of smaller rims!

Saint.
yolu think I can just ****ch to 18" with no other work?

i'll cheack hights anyway

Whilst the L322 calibration is taken from measurements to the bottom of the rim, you have to tell system the size of the rims so the centre of the wheel is always the same distance from the wheel arch (like the P38 calibration) so a change of rim size will make no difference to that!

I have a list somewhere of the measurements, but i am at my parents at the moment so haven't got it on my phone!

You should be fine to swap to 18's with no bother!

whenever i recalibrate someones L322 EAS, they always comment on what a difference it felt after. a lot of calibrations seem to get knocked out of place over the years

That is exactly the reason. The "fix" is knock it into neutral when idling and it helps lessen the extent of the vibrations. But that is something all auto drivers do to help save the gearbox... right?

I get vibration at standstill as well - and mine is a 2003 4.4 V8 on 18s (I think!). Was wondering if it was an early symptom of gearbox failure. Like every other odd noise/creak the car makes :) Putting it into N stops it.

Cheers,

Jerry

I bloody hope not!

I too cant understand how different size wheels can cause viabrations at stand still!

My 4.4 does the same...just use N at the lights, did a GB fluid change a short while ago, couldn't see anything untoward so keeping an eye on things!
