I have ordered a service kit off eBay
I have the Haynes manual and utube videos
Is it an easy task for someone who is reasonably mechanically minded?

should be easy enough but if you are going to change the auxilliary drive belt you will need a special tool to release the spring loaded tensioner. One of the main jobs is to replace the crankcase breather filter, you may find the screws holding the cover plate down are difficult to remove as they may not have been moved before like the ones on my td4,If the car has done around 100k it will be worth doing the "one wheel up test" to make sure the VCU is in satisfactory condition. If changing the gearbox and ird oil make sure you can undo the filler plugs before you let the oil drain out or you may not be able to put any oil back in !!
