Hi all,

I have a series 111 resto project.

Am looking at a 2.0 dieslel freelander to use more everyday!

Is there anything I need to look for? Chassis? Etc. The one I'm looking at has 70k on the clock so I can't see it vein in too bad nick!

Thought I'd ask you lot cos u are more freelander experienced than I am.

Cheers guys

Jamie

Hi,

There are a number of things to check:
if it's a 1.8 petrol, check the head gasket is ok, check for mayonnaising. This is the most common problem. Check the cambelt has been changed.

On all others, check the VCU is ok - it only has a usable life of 70K. Check it has the prop shaft fitted, check for water in the rear cubby hole or in the passenger footwell. Check ALL electrics - they often don't work. Listen to the windows - the winding cables corrode badly. Check for engine leaks and especially coolant leaks. If in any doubt, get a second opinion from someone who's had a freelander - they have a number of common faults.

As he said it was a doozil I think...

doesnt really apply

Also check for
Chassis cracking
Rear subframe mount broken
propshaft gaiter intact
cracking of coolant bottle
rear diff mounts
"blocking" of tyres
corrosion under engine fuse box

If in any doubt of the condition of the VCU budget for a recon now. There is lots of advice on here on how to check it. It's an easy DIY swap and my recommendation is go for a Bell Eng recon. The other common check points are well covered on here too.
I've had series, defender and discos, all have their faults. Freelander is a fine car, just check it over fully and enjoy it.

just dont go near any of the petrol models, there not worth the hassel.

im on my second freelander now, my first was an l series xdi and now im on my second, a 2004 td4 sport.

i can say there both great cars, the l series is more of a work horse, great for towing etc.. but rather slow.

the td4, not as much low down torque, but with the engine mods fitted like egr bypass, synergy etc.. it goes like a rocket.

had my td4 for 6 months now and i havent got a bad word to say about it.

so i recommend the td4 2003 onwards.

just make sure the one you buy hasd been serviced regularly.

theres not that much that can go wrong on a freelander :p:p

hope this is of some help
:D

Thanks for the advice fellas! What would a decent price be for a diesel? 70k or there abouts?

Jamie

Depends on which one and extras fitted but you're probably in the 3.5 to 10k area; it varies a lot dependant on year and model. Presumably you're looking at a td4? Some details might be good sunshine! :D

Auto trader to get an idea of current pricing. Fella on here has one in the for sale section at almost 7k with 55000 on the clock.

Read all the stickies/big threads and you'll know exactly what to watch for too.

I love mine but I have a wet cubby to deal with next!

Cheers ;)
