Evening all. Well, it's now been a few days since we collected our 2005 FL1 HSE TD4 and I must admit, despite all the horror stories, we're pretty damn happy with it. We've only covered about 120 miles in it but it seems to start, go, turn and stop as it was intended.
If I'm honest I'm still pretty worried about the whole VCU / IRD issues that these things suffer with. I am pretty obsessed with how tight it feels when reversing round on full lock, admittedly it does sort of bind and feel a little tight but it does roll first and it also can be moved easily using just the engines idle speed and clutch control so I'm hoping its had a VCU and all is well (there are absolutely no noises or juddering etc when driving). It has got full history and has just done 80,000 miles so I'm intending to get it into a local Land Rover specialist over the next few weeks to get it checked over as it has come with a 15 months parts and labour premium warranty supplied by 'auto guard warranties'. I fully intend to at least attempt to get some money out of them for something however if all else fails I am (well, was) a level 3 qualified technician so sure I can find my way around it if it comes down to it. Thinking just try and get a new VCU done under the warranty anyway as tbh, that's the only thing that concerns me although I may well be being over paranoid about it all.
Anyway, luckily on Saturday when we collected the car I popped to my brothers who had a proper ice slop round the back of his flat car park which no one has managed to get up since the big freeze... I'm pleased to say our lil landy went up with ease (another sign the VCU is ok maybe?) and descending it using the magic that is that little yellow switch was absolutely brilliant.
I am getting a beeping noise when unlocking all the doors from the fob which stops once we get in however the manual says this is due to low batteries in the fob which I'll do this week. The beige heated leather is absolutely great even on these cold mornings and the heated front screen is a right bonus (still can't figure out why so few manufacturers fit heated front screens).

Right, not going to go on anymore but just thought into would be nice to share a positive experience about the lil landy as opposed to all the doom and gloom that constantly graces these pages (I'm sure the doom and gloom will inevitably come sooner or later).

Thought I'd add a little pic of it anyway because yes, I am that happy with it.

I'm the only bugger who will clean it anyway (by me I actually mean the Slovakian lads down the road ;) ) so I think it's my prerogative to get it a little mucky!

nice car bud (pity the wife didn't fancy a blue one eh ;) ) look up bell engineering out at bewdley. they are well renowned specialists in everything vcu/ird related and will check yours out for you and give you the good/bad news. alot of people on here have used them and recommend them highly.

Cheers. I must admit I think the Green works perfectly with the interior. I'd heard good things about bell so may have a run over there at some point although I live in wombourne and have a Land Rover Specialist called Pheonix 4x4 that are literally half a mile away and he seems to know his stuff as I had a towbar off him yesterday.

You had any interest in yours yet?

OOI, how much was the warranty?

TBH we only payed £306 for it however its since been pointed out that the garage cocked up as £306 was the standard 4x4 price but land rover had they're own category which should actually be £406... Says it all. Luckily the dealer has honoured the quote and stumped up the extra £100 to make sure we're covered.

Makes a lot of sense to have this. Bought my 1.8 50k miles ago (120 total now) now on ebay from a bloke who had just toured Europe in it and had lost all service records. I did zero homework. Been lucky with it tbh but would never buy this way again! All the best with it:)

I honestly believe that the freelander gets an unfair press. I was in the trade so I know certain brands but my cousin is an RAC Inspector and one of the most knowledgable mechanics going and even he says they're not actually as bad as people would have you believe. I think it's just that there's so many abused examples out there now its getting hard to pick out the genuine ones.

133,000 miles and still going strong for me too.

Irritating things for me - sunroof needs replacing (as do most cars) and the rear window drop isnt as clean as it should be.

Hope you get lots of happy motoring from it. :)

Get under the car , after a run and touch the VCU , it, should be cold or at most warm , if it is very hot , there is a problem , mine was missmatched tyres . enjoy your freelander
