Forgive the ignorance, but what's the spongy filter looking thing under the bonnet at the bse of the windscreen, as it's completely perished on mine...

Hi there

I'm on the Wirral and am buying it from the 4x4 specialist mechanic in New Ferry.

Thanks

Hi Meanca, if you fill in 'my profile' peeps will know roughly where you are and it will automatically show, in the top right of your posts.

Also, if you put the year/model/gearbox details in your signature, it'll save people asking "what Disco have you got, what year/engine gearbox?"

HI, when you get the Haynes manual start at the front of the car and tick off all the major service items, then tighten all the jubilee clips as they rattle loose and cause leaks, then if you havent already replace the hard plastic pipe from the last diesel plug to the return pump, change it for frexible hose and a couple of plastic zip ties, this pipe becomes brittle and when it breakes it will dump diesel everywhere. Then get underneath and change all the fluids, diffs, boxes, then pump grease into all the nipple points, check all the prop shaft bolts and UJ joints for any play, my second gear can be a bit crunchy, all i do is pause for a second between 1st & 2nd and its fine, Its never boring owning a Landie, there a bit like a family pet, every household should have one, good luck and remember "id rather push my landie than drive a jeep!!!"

I'm from Wirral too and probably about 3 months ahead of you - I bought a cheap MoT-fail Disco and spent a couple of months renovating it. Performs well so far! So, let me know if there's anything you get stuck on.

I'll bear that in mind and keep in touch with you. I'm new to working on cars so don't really know anything just yet. My brothers being pretty good at helping me out so far, but he's not exactly a mechanic. God help the poor Disco!

Thank you for your post. I've printed it off and will run through it all. I've ordered the servicing parts and sedimentor seals today so should get that before I pick up the disco on Thursday. Then I can spend Saturday servicing it. I still don't know the name of the sponge that runs pretty much the midth of the engine bay just under the back of the bonnet, below the windscreen. Any ideas?

i cant remember exactly the name of the spongey stuff, but its not majorly important!! i would also recomend doing the cambelt, waterpump, aux belt and tensioners. regards to wax oil, not alot you can do about any rust inside the chassis,so just pump it full of waxoyl to protect whats left, as for the outside of the chassis, go round the whole underneath with a wire brush and a hammer, weld any plates that need doingmthen use tetroseal brushable underseal, real messy but brilliant because its like tar, brush it on,leave for few hours and voila!
oh and welcome to the forum :)

Prepare yourself to be depressed when you realise you cannot stop finding rust.

Then, once it's all repaired, prepare yourself to be truly exhilarated that you're driving an old car that's rust free and completely sound.

I CANNOT WAIT for that day! :D

yeah i guess so, but i'll be happy when mine is all welded, super schutzed, recently motd and without any apparent rust holes.

what i would do for a brand new disco 1 inner body!!! :5bdrool5:
