I am about to search the forums on this so please don't flame me, but would like to know if urgent action is needed.

My '03 Disco 2 is sitting with it's RH rear right up in the air and the SLS warning light on Amber. The suspension looks at full height to me and I can hear the compressor running.

Hawkeye gives a fault code of 4165 and the following:
"Plausibility"
"Raising Rear Right"

Sensor readings are as follows:
Rear Left Height 164 Counts
Rear Right Height 135 Counts

Not sure if this is bollocks or not as cant relate "counts" high or low to height high or low, but the right is obviously way higher than the left.

I think the SLS is still trying to lift the Disco up, so I am wondering if I should manually lower it using the Hawkeye and switch off to avoid damage. Mileague is 60k and I replaced the bags at 55k.

Obvious answer would be a failed height sensor?

Hawkeye says circuits and grounds okay.

Will post again after some research, but any warnings or instant advice appreciated!!

Thanks
JC

Hi Jock, with the SLS system the vast majority of problems are caused by:

Faulty bags and faulty ride height sensors.

Preventative maintenance keeps the system in tip-top order so replacing the airbags with Contitech (not Dunlop) ones every 3 to 5 yrs and ditto the ride height sensors will resolve any general issues.

However, to your current problem; almost certainly caused by a faulty sensor.
1. Before doing ANY work on the system, disconnect the battery earth lead, so the SLS is not aware of you playing with it.

2. Manually lower the offending side by allowing air to escape from the relevant valve next to the compressor. Once it is about right, move to no. 3.

3. Examine the sensors and clean as necessary. Examine carefully to ensure the plastic arms arm still connected. Disconnect the electrical connectors, clean with switch cleaner, work them in and out a few times to ensure good contact then reconnect.

4. Reconnect battery earth, ensure all doors and bonnet and are closed, then start the engine via the open window of the drivers door. This will allow you to watch the progress of the air suspension and listen to the working of the compressor. If the offending side starts to climb too much immediately stop the engine.

Order two new ride height sensors (about £30 each for LR ones) and fit them - ENSURE YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERY BEFORE DISCONNECTING THE SENSORS.

Good luck

Dave

PS Assuming there isn't a leak of air in the system, once you achieve the correct ride height if the compressor continues to pump, remove the relevant fues from the engine bay fuseable links section in the fuse box. This will reduce the danger of over-inflation until you replace the ride-height sensors.

Thanks Dave, good words.

Sensors look fine, but are dirty. Original units, so replacement a good idea anyway. I note your comment re the battery, so after I've found my bl**dy radio code will do that, remove sensors, examine and clean.

I am 99% sure that it is a faulty sensor, since the counts are wildly different when I manually level the vehicle.

Was supposed to pick up my son and two other boys from Scout Camp on Monday (since I have 7 seats). Why do these machines always let you down at the worst moment... my P38 was exactly the same.

Cheers
Jock
