Hi, first post here. I'm considering buying an ex-MOD Snatch Land Rover but am concerned about whether it is road legal. Can anyone offer advice?

Thanks!

As long as it can pass an MOT for it's age, weight and number of seats then why not?
After all it's just a 'slightly' modified Land Rover and there's plenty of them about.

Obviously you're not concerned about fuel consumption!

Fuel consumption... V8... what? ;-)

I'd read somewhere (I think it was on ARRSE) that they weren't road legal because the armour pushed it over an axle weight limit - also there's a slight concern that the police may not be too keen on a member of the public driving around in an armoured vehicle, but then again it's apparently legal to own ex-military armoured personnel carriers and drive them.

If there are any police officers reading this I'd really like to hear what you have to say, either publicly or via a PM.

I`m not sure its a Police issue as much as an MOT one - in that weight can affect MOT class, so you might be better off talking to a friendly MOT tester (they do exist!)
If I were you I`d probably try one of the military vehicle forums, search back copies of military vehicle magazines, joint the EMLRA, or pick the brains of one of the friendlier big advertisers on Milweb. I was in the EMLRA for a while and found their members very knowledgeable and helpful, and its very reasonable to join.
You should try to find someone who already has a similar Landrover - I heard that they can be a challenge to live with on a daily basis ( weight = slower, worse mpg, poor manoueverability, wear on suspension and drive train ) but its all subjective

cant see the pros of having one, unless ya unpopular. That sed cant see why itd be ilegal. British plod have em (or very similar) as riot spec too.

Yes there road legal and I drove them and vixan (snach2) on a B cat licence
Dam good fun they are too just don't go to hard into the corners as the buggers roll easy.

If you can source and buy one before they get exported from the armed forces then you are doing well.
Very, very few of them are sold onto the civilian market. They are heavier and often are not hard-top.
Nice accessorys though...
