Erratic temperature gauge

Hello all... Just wondering if anyone has had a similar issue .I have a 2007 TDV8 Vogue. 130k on the clock. I noticed the temp gauge will rise to half way as normal, however for no apparent reason on occasion it will fall downto quarter or even less. It still blows warm air from the vents etc. It can stay in the 'cold' position for a few minutes and then rise back to half way again .it's totally erratic. Any ideas ?

Check the wiring and connection to the sensor as a first port of call.

Thermostat needs replacing

Mines goes straight to half way within a few minutes of start up. Never changes even after i put a full new thermostat in it.

Could be a moving air pocket preventing coolant from reaching the temp sender from time to time.

Post #40 is were I found the chaffed wire leading to my temp needle fluctuating...
