Hi

1995 Defender 300TDI

My temperature gauge recently stopped working (always showed totally cold). So I earthed the connector on the back of the gauge and this caused the pointer to shoot up to fully hot as expected. I then replaced the sensor in the engine block with this one from ebay:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291669396313?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649#vi-ilComp

However now when I turn the ignition on from cold the gauge immediately rises to just below half way (just below where it used to sit at normal running temperature). After 10 minutes or so driving it is at maximum hot and implying that nuclear fusion is about to occur under the bonnet (I've checked and it isn't).

I've watched this video on YouTube (watch at about 5:00) and am wondering whether my sensor is not the correct one for my Defender, but meant for a Discovery, even though is neither green or black as per those in the video?

Any advice appreciated.

Dave
