I've been topping the oil up in the gearbox and transfer box of the '78 Santana I bought before Christmas, but I decided to change it all today.

Having drained it, I ran a magnet through the old stuff that had been in the gearbox.

She's lost a few teeth hasn't she? Still works perfectly in all gears though (although there is a tendency to sneak out of 1st when nobody's looking).

Should I be worried about this?

i would want to rebuild box in the not too distant future, but its synchro hub thats breaking up which is why it appears fine

I'll have to google that and do a bit of research into how I can go about that. Is the syncro hub thingy likely to be the culprit of the "slipping out of 1st" issue?

Honestly though, it runs really well in all gears. I treat the gbox like a baby, unlike the previous owner obviously. In fairness, he did tell me about that issue, and also noteworthy is that it only happens when not moving or engine breaking on hills. I just hold it in gently with a fingertip which works easily.
