Just wondering now should it be in neutral or park to top up fully? (While the engine is running)

Either will do, But remember to run through gears after first fill to level. its all up there^^^ in this fred.

My mechanic told me it was filled properly as he filled it through the dipstick tube... that it doesn't have (funny that) so I'm going to fix it myself

Oddly enough he hasn't asked for any money yet? (Also funny)

Hummm makes you wonder;). Interested to see how much comes out of the drain plug;).

And what you find.

It takes a long time to build up a good reputation, and only one job to lose it, if he's a decent mech he will not want to lose his Rep
'decent' lol I think not

Well it dropped about 3.5l of oil bear in mind it also dropped 1 to 2l previously as then took barely 3l after i fitted the new filter and was no better

After running it for a bit then shutting it off and restarting it works but then going again is intermittent

I'm completely confused by it

Some metal on the magnet but no large pieces only some fine metal so it wasn't too bad and the fluid was brownish with a slight tint of red

it should take about 5L after filter change (not sure about the 22 box but more than 3 I would think) suggest you rushed the level check procedure between filling.

So would suggest you now check level and top up again.

I am sure I did the level right

Cooler line is a very good idea especially as the last box died of overheating how would I test the lines and clear them?

Mine took almost all of a 5L can when I last did it.

Well, here we are back again
So it went to someone who actually knows what they are doing and they found the selector wasn't adjusted properly and then told me that it was perfectly fine I told him to keep it for a week as I was sure that wasn't the only problem and it didn't take long for it to stop working for him (perfectly fine huh?) But it brought up a gearbox error code this time and last time I talked to him I lent him my snap on code reader because it can run tests and he's working on it this week
When I speak with him more I'll tell you what the problems were

Also before he took it to his workshop I noticed a puddle in the boot of it, the sunroofs are fine and the back door seal looks fine it might be coming in the window... Any common areas for leaks that I could look at when I get it back?
Thanks

So where in the boot was the puddle, as its common for the sun roof to leak but not windows and doors, bet to take every thing out and put some paper in it to see were it dripping from

Middle of the boot about 10 cm from the back door and the back door card is wet

It has a rubber boot liner in it that has caught the water

Update
So....
It needs a gearbox
I'm going to get a second hand gearbox for it and I've seen quite a few ranging from one that's done 64k but £450!! and to one that's done 140k for £100
Any advice on buying a second hand gearbox?

Its been a year since it blew the gearbox
And in the meantime I borrowed a 2000's range Rover sport off a friend a few times and it snapped the crankshaft and locked the engine when I was driving back to return it

enjoying some of that land Rover reliability (maybe it's allergic to me or something)

he got most of his money back for selling it and I made up the rest to cover it's value and he brought a bmw to replace it

Why not just get Ashcrofts or someone to rebuild the one you have? If reliability you want?
