Series 3 ECM gear sets in gearbox

Got the gearbox from the 78 six pot fully in bits to inspect and rebuild. The good news, after finding two teeth and the synchro clips in the sump when draining the oil, is that it must have been rebuilt pretty much right before the engine seized and it was taken off the road over 20 years ago.
Its a B prefix box but pretty much all the gears look new and in perfect condition and it has a D prefix layshaft in it and no missing teeth from any of the gears (whoo-whoo, all are reusable apart from the sychros)
However it has the earlier synchros fitted and I am now wondering if the gears were replaced at the time of rebuild but a D layshaft fitted, are all the gears from a pre D box or not?
there are no marks or numbers, is there any way of identifying the earlier and later gears for my piece of mind? I don't really like relying on somebody 25 years ago who I don't know building the box correctly and the vehicle was not running when I got it so no idea how the box runs:(
Preferably would like to be able to be sure they are all older style gearwheels or not.
 
No takers for how to identify ECNM gearwheels?
I emailed synchro gearboxes as well and awaiting a reply, there must be some way of telling them apart surely?
 
Thats fine for the synchros but what about all the other gears?
The WSM says don't use ERM gears with the pre suffix D layshaft but doesn't say if you can use the Suffix D layshaft with Pre Suffix D gears.
I would like to know what gears are in it as there are a few detail differences, one being the reverse selector rod, mine seems to be the right length for Suffix D gears but is that right? There is no measurement for pre Suffix D length so how would I know if it is simply wrong of the reverse selector has been changed?

I find if you sneak up on third it generally works.

While I have it in bits I would like to have it right as far as possible, then I can blame the broken bits and problems on crap BL construction and design rather than me putting it together wrong.
Seriously though, I have it in bits and putting all the effort into fully rebuilding it so I would like it to be as good as possible. Plus I really don't want to have to pull it apart again for a long time:D
 
I have spent the last week or so tracking all the necessary bits down now I had it completely apart. Got a full set of quality bearings and seals for it, mostly genuine or SKF equivalents. Also got all the little shims and pins etc coming nearly all NOS or genuine.
I wanted to replace the 3/4 sychro unit anyway and managed to get a genuine Input Pinion/gear and 3rd gear so the whole 3/4 assembly is now going to be suffix D rather than B, the 1/2/R remain Suffix B as pretty much all of it looked brand new and it is 3rd that seems to be the worst for the jumping out of gear issue, this may help as the whole section is going to be D and new.
Just getting ready to start pressing the new bearings in so in the next week or so it should start coming together.
So it all worked out in the end, I hope!;)

I will have a fair few really good condition suffix B/C parts from the input shaft to the 3/4 gears and synchro unit available to anyone that may need them. They are in pretty good condition and anybody local who wants a look is welcome to do so. They are far too good to scrap but not something I expect to need again so looking for swoppsies WHY or just a few quid for any of them. Even got a number of good SKF and RHP bearings that anybody can collect for free that look in good nick from a box that looks like it was only recently rebuilt, I am just changing them on point of principle while the box is apart but it seems a shame to just bin them.
Any reasonable offer accepted, don't do ebay these days and would prefer anybody seeing and being happy with them anyway, pictures are hard to tell condition from.
 
All sorted and built up, however I have one remaining query. The handbook is unclear what way round the 1st Gear Thrust Washer is fitted to the box although it is fairly clear that the grooves are fitted facing 1st gear, the other side is not rotating and the angle of the washer is set up for that fitment direction.
I just noticed that the Croker set of gearbox videos say to fit it with the grooves facing the casing, away from the gear.
Any thought on why he says this?
 
I eventually sorted out the ECM issue and the thrust washer obviously fits with the grooves facing the gear rather than the casing, trying it in situ makes that clear due to the taper on one side of the washer and the fact that the smooth side against the casing is not rotating, hence doesn't need oil grooves or oil supply.
However the handbook is a bit unclear and the croker rebuild video ( I was checking now the box is back together to make sure I hadn't missed aanything) has the washer fitted with the grooves facing the casing.
I am not worried about this, it seems an obvious mistake as you cannot set the clearances this way round and the thrust washer doesn't sit right, just curious about the situation and would like to be 100%

Well done for getting it back together. I always hated working on gearboxes, not done one for years and never intend to. Just getting the gearbox out fills me with dread.
