Also known as not being ripped off. Anyway, who's saying that I drove it more? ;)

Well, if for example you drove it to school or college regularly, then you'd be classed as the main user. Sure you got away with it, but if you crashed and killed somebody (easily done in a 2-tonne land rover) then you would be in the absolute ****. I'm not getting at you mate, just explaining why I would never want to do that. :)

Fair enough, in my case i'm at uni during term time and as ive got nowhere to park my 90 its been at home this year and last. On my insurance the registered address is at home anyway, so its pretty clear to the insurer that i'm only able to drive it a fraction of the time my dad can.

Ollie

Exactly. I'm now insured in my own name at 20 and it's only £468, so I've effectively cut out the 'young drivers' charges and all that bollocks caused by chavs (unlike myself) who bought a corsa so that they can go like **** off a stick and kill themselves or worse; others. I bought a Land Rover because I wanted to drive properly and I've always wanted a truck so this is the closest I can get. The elders on here whinge about young driver idiots pushing costs up, why can't we sensible ones too! I made sure I wasn't penalised.

I see your point totally, but I'm not prepared to pay higher prices to cover the idiots my age who go around driving irresponsibly, just as I wouldn't give them any help if they'd deliberately done something wrong. And as a matter of fact, I did drive it to school quite often. If anything had happened, I'd have just said that I took the car on that day. My Dad did (and still does) enjoy driving it whenever he can :D I had a friend at school who wrote off two consecutive courtesy cars  He's now been refused insurance - too damn right!

Oi!! Us 'elders' used to be in your shoes...most of us are just pointing out that statistically its 18-25 years olds that have accidents.

We are not 'whinging'..I think the insurance premiums you pay are bloody obscene..and if your nan/dad/mum whatever wants to risk their no claims then fair enough..

If there are loopholes then exploit them and keep your mouth shut otherwise they will be closed soon..

I am bloody 43, not ancient, still get laid regularly and dont yet dribble...and most of the people you refer to as whingers hand out loads of advice based on years of experience..

Kids today...bastids all of em..

Agreed about the chavs and boy racers, I know a guy who is 18 and has written off 3 cars already. I just don't think he should be allowed to drive any more, he's proved he's incompetent.

But just because you say you want to be a truck driver and you bought a Land Rover to be sensible doesn't rule out the possibilty of you having a crash. You were lucky and got through the 2 years without harm, but to be honest I certainly wouldn't advise it, to me it's reckless and it's illegal for a good reason when you think about it!

Haha :) I said elders, not old people! You can tell that CharlesY is one of the older people on the site though (is he in his late 50's?). He is very wise and very straight forward. He hates youngsters answering back and what he says goes :)

Fair enough. It's a known fact that younger drivers are more than likely to have an accident but to me it was still the principal of knowing that I was being penalised for the idiots out there, which when in comparison, I'm not really as big a threat with regards to my attitude towards driving in a Land Rover, as some dickhead chav in boy racer car. You can't put a price on a life though, regardless of how much you pay for your insurance. A lot of people couldn't care less about personal matters these days (it would seem) - everything is based on money and not much more, especially in politics and business. It's a cold, cold world out there  Oh, and they are cracking down on the loopholes slowly. A lot of companies now wont insure one person on two cars if the second car has a young named driver. That's unfair on those who obviously want to drive two cars, but also whose younger son or daughter who may not be driving the car more than the registered keeper.

they should tell him to buy a moped:p

i think they should give all young drivers a year say half the price of a normal quote
then after the year if they crash, any confictions anything on the wron side of the law vehicle related then insurance compaines should go to town on them instead of doing it straight away to those handful of non boy racer style young drivers:D

End of the day insurers are there to make money. they look at the risks involved in insuring someone/thing, and set the premium to suit it. Fact prove if ya male under 25. there iis a good chance that you will make a claim and so ya premiums reflect this. Insurers would prefer not to have to insure you at all. But Gov insists that they do, so they rack the cost up to try and stop you from driving.

Yup, but I wasn't having that now was I!

I think something like this could work, a year of probation when you're not allowed to get any points on your license or make a claim for a crash etc. Trouble is it'll never be implemented, since the insurers make far too much money out of us.

I was 17 when I started driving my 90. We had it with NFU as a family policy sort of thing with my Dad, me and my Mum on it. It cost around £700 for the lot. When it came to ripping the TD out and putting a 200Tdi in it we just rang them and they just said 'Oh we havnt got a box for that, I'll put it in the notes section'. No arguing or more expensive insurance.

I think they should offer driving lessons at school for at least 2 years to students who wish to pick that subject. There they could be taught everything related to driving safely & wisely including practical knowledge & also a couple of police sessions showing the consequences of poor driving, culminating in the school putting them through the driving test & beyond. Anyone who has completed this long course should then automatically get the 2 or 3 years they studied for as their no claims discount as well as some sort of introductory incentive.

Interesting story in the papers couple of weeks ago. 16 year old lad was killed whilst driving a 90 for a planthire company he worked for. Police & CPS are trying to prosecute em for corporate manslaughter, As the lad was too young to drive a motor vehicle. But they've hit a bit of a brickwall. As the company is claiming that a landrover is a tractor and therefore he was legally allowed to drive it. That'll be an interesting argument in court.

surely that only if it was under that (tractor bracket) cant remember the proper bracket makes it legal to run on red derv and tax free but if it was he should of been displaying Ls surly?? :p

Depends what it says on the V5..i had one where it said 'agricultural vehicle'..if it says anything else then the insurance should pay...but they will drag it out as usual...he was 16...gonna cost them a fortune..hope they bleed.

I have a 110 1990 ex mod defender and it has the usual army 2.5 na diesel. I am 17 soon and fuel conumption is an issue, will a new tdi have less fuel consumption, run faster? Are there any other benefites? What is a estimated cost of an upgrade? Is it worth (possible) putting in a petrol and then an lpg conversion? Thanks a lot.

Young Noob.
In your position I would get a quote off your insurance company to 'upgrade' to a 'new vehicle' a 200 or 300tdi.
Work out how many miles a year you drive, work on say 23mpg and come up with a rough figure on how much you spend on fuel.
With a 200tdi you could get say an average of an extra 6 mpg... depending on how/where you drive.
For a young lad its all about cost.... tally your figures up and see what extra you will save by going for a 200tdi per year. I will bet you that by the time you bought another engine... a slight increase in insurance etc it will take you 5 years or more to break even.
I think a better option (if you want to upgrade) is sell what you have.. a straight land rover with original engine and buy a straight 200tdi. Less work, less hastle with insurance and DVLA and you will then have a 'straight' land rover that will hold its value.
