Help required again , recent probs with my TD5 shows that the head is finished , prices quoted for repair seem wild and vague !! also means losing the vehicle for a while , so am looking at the posibility of swaping for another engine which comes with waranty etc , straight mechanics dont bother me but the electronics do . somebody must have done this and any advice would be apreciated big time .many thanks in advance jim

straight mechanics dont bother me

What about gay ones?

Joking aside, if you're methodical and label all the wires up then the electrickery shouldn't pose any real problems as far as I'm aware.

Thanks DreXeL
like the mechanic bit , never noticed that when i wrote it , must be shock of prices I was quoted this morning . ta for the information I was concerned about the electronics if new engine was fitted new injectors might not be friendly with current setup even though its same unit (10p engine ) seems when the sums are done its the way to go , and gets landy back on the go fairly soon seems a shame when its the head thats faulty.. cheers Jim

Do you know what exactly is wrong with the head, maybe the advice would be more useful

Just head gasket? Or is it cracked.

sorry guys , yes should have put more details , engine has been losing water for some time , due to pressure its burst radiator hoses ,been leaking from radiator (all replaced ) run fine forwee while then ran hot quickly when hot landy was pulling trailer when speed down to 20 /25 it cooled ,my fault never noticed ,it wasnt on red but was hot . called a well known local 4x4 specialist who quoted £1000 for gasket replacement £1500 +vat + gasket and labour for head replacement.Got quote for replacement engine with waranty (90 days) at £1200 + vat so for speed and ease thought that it could be done here on a one out one in basis.
going to get another garage prices today if I can . This is a 130 as I have said great vehicle ideal for what I do but this aint been the easyiest landy to live with , turbo clutch nad now this.
any thoughts /opinions apreciated dont mind paying to get it fixed but within reason , dont want quoted 2 grand and it comes back with a 4 grand bill . cheers Jim

Sounds to me like they have quoted two prices, one for just gasket and one for if head is cracked too.

The price does not sound unreasonable. Maybe get them to take head off and if its ok just change the gasket, if not weigh up the costs. A 90 day warranty is not earth shattering, but perhaps a new head is worth it if the rest of the motor is healthy.

£1200 for a whole engine is a bargain assuming its a good un. Personally I'd try and get a 15p engine over a 10p one. (Cheap as chips ;)) A 90 day warranty should be enough time to see if its good. Check the warranty conditions carefully.

The ECU would run the new engine without coding the injectors but its something you should get done to assure things are running to their best efficiency. Anyone with a Nanocom or Hawkeye could do it in five minutes.

All of the electrics are plugged so its virtually impossible to get them connected wrongly.
I swapped a 10p engine out with a 15p over a weekend and it fired up first time.

Keep your old engine and either part it out or rebuild and sell on. You'd be surprised at how much you can draw back on the individual parts. Things such as oil coolers, oil pump ladder frames, front timing covers, are all on extended back order from LR and have been for several years so basically you can name your price if somebody wants them. Injectors are a favourite item and you can get between £50-£100 each on fleabay. Scrap ally bits and pieces such as the head will get £50 at a scrappy all day long. Put the sump, cam carrier cover, pistons, manifolds, etc on fleabay and you'll have the Africans fighting over them. Its where most of my old engine went as they cant get spares easily.

JMHO

Or you could just do what I did, throw out that engine and put in a 200tdi.lol
No kidding, that's what I did when the old td5 dropped the oil pump drive gear and killed itself.
But anyway, you really dont need to bother about the electrics, most of the connectors are foolproof and you may just be lucky enough to have the ECM accept all of the new engine's bits and start up on the first try.
I'll say go for the engine, and if you happen to have any problems with getting it to run right, put it on here and we'll share a few of the tricks of the trade learnt from living with these cars over the years....
All the best.
