Genuine "Lucarse" is utter crap, avoid anything in the green box..

Distributor doctor do great parts for the RRC.

Regarding the running the 3.9 runs at 12-14 static and 34 all in, you will more than likely have issues with the Weber 500 running the vacuum the timed vac port creates too much vac for almost all systems.

You're disconnecting the Vac and plugging it when timing it?

Right?
Thanks for the reply, interesting that yours runs 12-14 versus the factory figures of 4-6, I was checking last night with the timing gun, I reckon it will run at those sort of levels if I get the idle/ idle mixture right, it starting better with more advance. Yes, I have setting static timing with the vacuum disconnected, when I reconnect to the timed port it does n't vacuum advance until I build revs. I have read before the carbs can create too much vacuum for this type of distributor and wondered if there is any way of stepping the vacuum pressure down in line.

It will also depend on your camshaft. We used to take the 9.35 engine and put the cam from the 8.13 engine into them, then advance the timing from 4 to 12 and it made a totally different engine out of them.

That has crossed my mind too, the guy I bought the donor car from said it had a new head gasket, if that was a composite one would that lower compression and could that change the timing parameters? I don't know if the cam is original spec.
If I run the car with the standard ignition amp it will not misfire through the rev range but it is hard to start, I have gone back to the remote premium amp as it starts very well, feels crisper lower end but misses above 4k rpm.

What coil are you running? A "performance" coil could be a problem. Big coil will burn out the ignition amp that's why you should stick to standard amp and coil. There is no advantage from a "big" coil.

Also, on timing yes the V8 will run at 12 degrees advance; I set mine at 12 degrees running a Kent H180 cam, free flow air filter and 4 branch headers so mine breathes differently to the standard set up. Great mid range punch and nice stable idle but that is with efi so not sure how a carb set up would respond but it sounds like either you have a lean misfire at certain revs or your ignition system can't cope and needs attention. HTH

Thanks for the replies. It has a new regular Bosch coil , having pulled my hair out on this and wasting far too much time, I have booked it into a Rover V8 specialist to check it out. I want to stop buying new parts chasing an issue and getting no where. I will post the feedback.

I took the car to a V8 specialist and the issue was the brand new Bosch coil was faulty and causing the misfire. Once replaced the timing was set at 6 degrees BTDC and running fine. The lesson here was don't assume new stuff is always ok and the value of the experience of a specialist.
