Hi ,this is my first time on this forum and I am wondering if anyone has come across this problem.We bought a 2002 td5 3 months ago and it has developed a problem of cutting out as I go around corners it then becomes hard to start. This has happened in city driving and on country roads, It has happened 4or5 times in the last month and is making me feel very anxious about driving in traffic.
cheers Alan

Check the ECU in the underbonnet battery box for signs of oil in the wiring multiplug. clean with WD40 and an airline of so....

The electric fuel pump in the tank is known on the TD5 to be a bit of a weak link. No fuel and the engine will cut out!

are you getting a whine/gurgling from the fuel pump, on ignition on, when you try to restart?

I checked the plug at the ECU and cleaned it also cleaned the plug at the top end where it enters the engine it doesn't seem to have helped. The owner before us changed the fuel pump some months back to try to cure a starting problem without success.I traced that problem to a faulty second battery system that has now been removed. As for the fuel pump noise I will have to check next time it happens as I didn't take any notice before . Thanks Alan

Help required from a Td5 expert or anyone else who can throw any light onto my issue.

I have just come back from towing my daughters horse box for about an hour when the engine cut out without any warning or untoward noises. However, on the outward journey we did have some stutters when pulling hard up a short hill.

The car was running very well up until it stopped.

I recently had a new fuel pump (spurious make) so would imaging that it's not a pump issue. However, I did fill up with fuel after running very low and wonder if it could be dirty fuel.

Any ideas would be most welcome or, if anyone can recommend an appropriate place to start a search, or protocol to follow.

Many thanks in anticipation of your kind help.

@Alan Crossley ,

Do you have a Disco or a defender, only ask because your avatar piccie shows a fender.

Also It might be worth making a new post rather than reviving a dead post from 2009.

Cheers

when you say spurious make,it would make think fuel pump britpart stopped selling pattern pumps as they didnt last long at all ,and its not uncommon for new cheap pump to fail, a pressure test would prove the point , removing the plug or switch on the bottom of filter placing a container under it and getting someone to switch on the ignition unless it flows out like a fast running tap pumps failed or blocked, but that wont show what pressure the hp part of pump is kicking out

Check the fuel pressure regulator for any leaks directly underneath is the crank sensor my td5 started cutting out the sensor was buried in black sludge o cleaned it up an it lasted a few month but I changed the sensor just for peace of mind it hasn't cut out since.
