Hi all I am about to receive a bill from a garage even though the engine is worse then when it went in as they have no idea what the problem is .
I have a 1971 landrover 2.25 petrol it kept cutting out sometimes when driving but usually in traffic Jams
They found the carb butterfly flap was worn so replaced the carb ( still cutting out) then they replaced the fuel pump with an electronic one ( still cutting out) they then went down the electrical side replacing the coil which looks a bit cheap to me ( still cutting out) runs fine but comes to a halt then restarts as if there is nothing wrong? Coil is very hot to touch infact extremely hot .Now they seem to have given up and told me it has to go to a landrover specialist ? I have invested in a new coil it's supposedly a sports coil for a landrover? Waiting fir that to arrive but I am ready now to roll ot off a cliff to be honest as there are no landrover specialists near me ( I live in Swansea Wales) plus it won't drive without constantly cutting out ? When I bought it ( I wish I never now) the guy I bought vitamins off dud say the coil does get hot but I didn't hear the rest if what he was saying ? The old points have been replaced with an electronic system I also noticed that when you start it the turn over is very intermittent I pulled the starter off checked the bushes and earth strap all seems OK? Sometimes it wint turn over at all so I am thinking is it a faulty ignition causing this problem ? Someone said run a live to the coil and see what happens which I am yet to do I was told it could be overcharging that's causing the coil to get so hot ? I have been bombarded with advice and read many forums regarding this so to sum up it is definitely getting fuel the carb is new the pump is new so why is this thing constantly cutting out ? I installed a radio from a live supply that I found behind the dash when I drove it the stereo was constantly switching on and off which is also weird but I have no idea where that live wire is coming from sorry for being so long in this thread but this is the last straw I am trying to collect a van on a dolly from Irekand with it and am running out of time so you can see my frustration with what I was told was a very basic engine ? Any help here would be much appreciated

Sounds to me like the garage replaced lots of things without any diagnosis of the actual issue.
Could be the ignition switch being dodgy? You need to go back to the basics and check stuff . These engines are very simple

So they say lol ? I just rang them was told it idles now but once it heats up it dies on acceleration in all fairness the garage only charged me for parts they suggested to replace the electronic ignition system with a new one which I have ordered so to clarify it starts fine cold revs fine cold lots of power but when it gets hot and you floor the pedal it dies ? But then restarts as if nothing has happened Many thanks for your advice there

id say as kermit said could be the ignition switch. in regards to the electronic dizzy set ups i have heard a few now talking about how they are having issues with them, id suggest to go back to points and a condenser they are normally quite reliable, also new parts can be defective from day one as i have had a few items over the years thats new and was failing from the box, its down to poor quality control or a odd one out that was not checked. a very hot coil sounds like electrical, no need for fancy sports coils they wont make difference.
