i went through some water in yesterdays localised flooding. In all honesty i didnt realise how deep it was and went too fast and got a wash over the windscreen. I immediately slowed and then crawled through it but a minute later the engine cut out. I left it a minute and restarted it. It fired up but stuttered for a few seconds and then seemed to be ok. I just wondered if this was normal as ive not had a discovery 2 for long and i was a bit surprised. We are not talking about deep water here, maybe 6 to 10 inches. If it is not so good in those conditions, i will be nervous when i take it off road... The engine is a td5

Although you have a diesel your disco also has an engine management ecu under the bonnet behind the battery and electronic-control units and their sensors don't like getting splashed with water which is what "may" have happened.

i did exactly the same yesterday in a ford that was about 2 foot deep, (didnt think it was so deep) mine didnt cut out completely but did stutter a bit, there is a drainer for the air box in the wheel arch if you need to empty it. ;)

Probably sucked some water into the air filter housing. I would remove the top cover and replace the wet air filter element and empty the water out of the housing.
The cold air intake is right above the nearside front wheel so going fast through the water should be avoided really.

my mates taken his td5 through water deeper than that, like its already been said speed is the issue here... nice n slowly into water and push it forwards with the car if its deep - take a look at wading on youtube but remember you ain't equipped for proper wading so I wouldn't try anything more than a cupla foot until you are!
