I have a choice between keeping my much-loved 10 year old 164,000 mile manual Discovery 2 V8 - once I've paid for a second head gasket in 12 months, although it's been brilliant (and well-maintained) otherwise, or trading for a 80,000 mile well-maintained 1.8 petrol Feelander of the same age. If I kept the Disco what else could I reasonably expect to put my hand in my pocket for over the next couple of years?; (it's still on the original clutch so at least that I guess). It's a bit of a 'head vs heart' thing, with running costs and all the rest coming into it - do people have views?

was it not under warranty after the first HG change?

The 1.8 freelander is likely to require a new HG in the near future so you'd be no better off.

Buy the freelander. Its the most reliable vehicle land rover ever made. I traded in 8 defenders under the scrapage scheme just to get my hands on one of these marvels of engineering. Its sat on my drive now, surrounded by technicians fron Japan stealing the secrets of its success. Every time i take it off-road i come like an elephant.

Aye will be there shortly. need MOT tomorrow  and gotta get robints conservatory roof on so it;s watertight then I'll be allowed temporary leave of absence.

shall I tell her you'll be around to fix her dripping plumbing in a week or so? She'll need a bit of notice so she can draw out her pension to pay for your services. She said she'll have her see-thru nightie on and let you play with her cheese toastie.:p
