Disco 1 Is the the EGR sensor? 300tdi

On my cylinder head, I have this sensor, the plug is broken, and cables cut/snapped.

I think it's for the EGR, can anyone confirm?

If so, was thinking of stripping back the cables to tidy up. Also wondering if I should reuse the sensor hole for something else (e.g. an improved temp gauge, in degrees C)

Looks like ooolant temp sensor.

Google ERR2081A.

I can't see it well in your pic but if it's the one in the middle of the attached pic then it's for EGR too

Yes it's the EGR temperature sensor.
I have on on my Defender too and was thinking the same as you, "Can I use it for an improved temperature gauge ?"

It does sit in the water jacket ... so i'm heading towards a 'yes'
Has anyone done this ... ?

If you find a compatible gauge which transforms that sensor's resistance output to the real temperature which might be difficult that's why they sell gauges with the paired sensors in shops

I have a Stack which comes with a 3/8 BSP threaded sensor.
Looking for somewhere to insert it ...

I'm not the best with 300tdi engines but i think it must have a coolant elbow somewhere so you can find a spot on it where to drill and tap a proper thread, like i did on the Td5(attached as example) or buy an adaptor and cut the top hose(i dont like this method but works for many) with the proper ID off course: adaptor
