End of an era - time to move on.

After much thought and searching for a replacement I have decided it time to call it a day and move on.

My trusty Freelander has to be replaced.

I'm concerned about it's reliability on the long trips we make two or three times a year.

It's a five thousand miles + round trip and the last couple of times I've had fingers crossed nothing went wrong.

Auto transmission, rear diff, VCU etc. have now done 115K which is fine for local trips, but I'm getting too old to risk having to undertake major repairs at the road-side.

I'm not enamoured with the latest offerings from LR so have not decided what the replacement will be exactly.

Anyhow - I've got lots of extras and routine service parts for sale.

I'll be adding more in the next few weeks.

Shame, but I supose all good things come to an end I can understand you wanting something reliable doing those sorts of miles. Depending on the weather and terrain you travel, I'd be tempted to remove the props & VCU for those journeys any way! Other than the VCU (and possibly valves in the auto box) I think the Freelander's actually a quite reliable car - but any 10 year old car with 100K+ miles is going to start to need more repairs I suppose.

When our 80K miles/15 year old FL packed a VCU/IRD sad recently we wondered if it was worth repairing. To make it worse for us, we had to get parts shipped from the UK. But we couldn't think of anything we wanted to relace it with. Plently of sensible (Japanese!) options, but nothing we wanted. So it was repaired, and now that its back on the road, I'm really glad we did

In our experience LRs are very compasionate in their breaking down! Our old Disco would break down in the most scenic of places, but always limped home. When the Freelander went, it was 1/2 a mile from home and on that day we'd travelled 3 hours out to Akaroa and the previous day 4 hours up to Arthurs Pass So lots of remote Ks it could have chosen to fail on. I'm sure others have had the oposite experiences though!

I know what you mean Singvogel.
We have just bought another VW diesel for the long trips.
It averages 57mpg and just feels as if it is reliable.
I am always unsure with the Freelander although the worse the weather the more I love it.
Let us know what you are thinking of getting next so we can wrag it.
Please not a Toyota.
I have not found one I enjoyed driving yet.
Maybe not quite old enough

OK folks - you haven't heard the last of me - not just yet anyway.

My God but Synergy2s are in great demand - mine sold in a flash - thanks to all who enquired. I could have sold 10 of them.

Plenty other bits and pieces are still up for grabs at low prices.

Good luck with whatever you replace it with. I hope you don't regret getting rid of the Freelander. I've passed on 5 over the years with a variety of replacements. Problem i'v found is all that glitters isn't necessarily gold!! I missed my last Hippo so much I spent lots of time finding a low mileage well cared for example that should last me for years to come.

You thought about replacing the vulnerable bits and keeping it. I alway buy high milage cars that are at least 10 years old....

My wife's car is a ford puma with 186000 miles on the clock. My Volvo was 200000 and the last probe I had was 1700000 I would drive anywhere in any of them no matter how far. ( and yes they are all petrols)

the freelander I bought with 128000 miles on the clock. Now just need to tax it and start driving it.

Lots of good suggestions there - but Mrs Sinvogel and I have gone through all the possibilities and implications involved in continuing travelling to Bosnia, Vojvodina, Serbia (and other places - all ex-War Zones) in the Balkans several times a year with the Freelander - and it's getting risky.

Freelander parts are like hen's teeth out there. There are of course dealers in Belgrade, Zagreb, Ljublijana and a couple of other major cities, but we are often hundreds of miles from any of them.

I'm no stranger to high mileage vehicles.

Our old M-Benz 208 van did over 360K miles before I sold it to a nice guy on the Isle of Skye - and our current 1998 M-Benz Sprinter 212D is 'nicely run in' at 110K. But there are M-Benz dealers and spares available everywhere.

We need a vehicle which has readily available spare parts and mechanics who are familiar with it.

Now that we are not carrying Humanitarian Aid goods these days, we don't need much load-carrying capacity - so perhaps a comfy 2litre saloon is called for.

And I'm not as young as I used to be.

Unfortunately a Scottish Bus Pass only gets me as far as Berwick upon Tweed or perhaps Carlisle or Newcastle if I blag the last few miles. LOL

Anyhow I've revised the items in the parts for sale section and put prices for most things.

All negotiable and I'll send them at cost.

Newcastle's a nice placeI'd be looking at a vw Audi or the like.had a octavia few year back bought with high mileage outstanding motor never faultered.good luck with your choice
