Hi,

my 96 RangeRover 4.6 P38 gave up on me. Doesn't start anymore and plenty of error messages are in the display: Gearbox broken, airbag broken, ... Very unlikely that all those components are dead after parking the car for 5 days.

I disconnected and reconnected the battery for a few hours, all the settings like window positions are lost. However, still same problem. Charging the battery right now, but I think chances are little that this solves the problem.

Any idea what to do? Is there anything to fix / reset without the computer-interface and custom shop software to read out and deal with the electronics?

Thanks,
Dirk

Those are the classic symptoms of a flat battery. Try giving it a full charge with a wall adapter and everything will be peachy (until the bat dies again).

You need to look at the main fuse box in the engine bay. Corrosion and burnt contacts are commonplace here. You may get away with cleaning all the contacts but some say it's best to replace the whole unit.

Flat battery classic symptoms, recharging may not be enough, the battery may not recover. You need to check the voltage 30 minutes after it comes off charge, you should get a reading around 12.5 volts, if it has dropped below that think new battery.

Yes, I figured this out in parallel last night and tried charging overnight and yes you were 100% right!!! :)

Since the battery is only one year old and a Varta quality battery the question is: Why does it drain so much power when it's parked? It got flat in less than a week.

Damn, my battery apparently went bad AGAIN. Bought it not even a year ago, 110Ah Varta branded battery. After a full charge leaving the car lights on for about 4-5 minutes I could see slowly brightness dimming down and car barely started. Time for a new battery I guess.

Another funky (eventually related) electric problem occurred for which I opened a new discussion thread for: http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/funky-blinker-outage-electric-issue-p38-132406.html#post1359188

surely the battery is still under guarantee isn't it???.
