Just bought a 4.0 P38 with full history etc, etc and the windows aren't going up or down. The mirrors don't move either. The seller assured me they did up until he power washed it (under the bonnet too, unfortunately). I have checked all the fuses and all seem ok and the fuse boxes are both dry. Front window LH and RH not set is also showing on the dash. I know how to re-set the windows normally but it can't be done if they aren't opening. Any ideas..................? There are no other faults showing on the dash.

Does it have a sunroof?? Does that open and close?? Do you have access to another P38?? Try switching the window switch pack over with it. I would suspect that first especially if not even the mirrors arent working.

If thats not possible, see if you can find a specialist who can hook up their diagnostic kit. With the computer you can actually work the windows/mirrors/sunroof all from the diagnostic machine. This way you can find out whether the motors and associated wiring is actually ok. If it is it most likely is the switch pack.

Does the switch pack light up at night with the lights on??

-Wills :)

Thanks for reply. No, it doesn't have a sunroof and the switch panel does light up with the headlights. Just tried it again - same as before.

I had the same problem turned out it was the switch pack although I have a sunroof, occasionally it would work but eventually just gave up.

They dont cost a great deal new from rimmer bros and are usually delivered next day mine cost £125 including postage, there was a discount at the time (5%) and the walnut one is only a couple of quid more.
I would not recommend buying a second hand one as it is a very common problem and it probably wont last.

Fixed it. After a bit of searching (soul included) located a switch pack at a breakers. Fitted it and they work now. Only problem now is the driver's window chatters halfway up and has to be gripped and assisted up. Motor????

I have the same problem. The switch pack did light up but the windows still did not work. bought a used switch pack and that one doesn't work either. do you think it still may be the switch pack? or is there something else i can do or test?

in the case of the window chattering, the teeth on the mechanism are stripped and you will requre a new one or if your any good at metal work you can rebuild the old one, replacements are about 50 quid from ebay.

it's held in by 3 rivets and you will have to drill these out and replace with bolts.

hi. i have a p38 the drivers window would not go up properly it tended to get stuck halfway up my son works in a good gararge and when i told him. he had some what they call a rubber spray you just spray it into the inner furry window seal and it lubricates it. you might think it would clog it up but it does not work like that it stays in like a moist form. i realise that you are getting the teething problems but it may just let it close without so much effort to cause a chattering teeth problem. if not then it will just have to be a quick visit to the dentist for a new set ! if they look at you gone out" just tell um buzzby sent ya !

my windows aren't "chattering" they aren't doing anything at all actually lol! still i've not found a solution either - maybe the switchpack i bought is a bad as well.

hi sondee. i wont come out with any crap! i promish ya.
i had a problem with the p38 windows they did not want to wisper talk chatter or f--k all. except let the rain in as the passenger one was partly down when they packed up. and then my son who is a machanic found a fuse under the bonnet that had blown it was a green 30amp replaced that and it was fine . but i had not long had the rangie then and had no manual or owners hand book at that time so was not sure where to look. i did notice that recently when i was trying to get the radio to except the code i took some ones elses sugestion to remove fuse 1 and 8 withe the radio on and ignition key in position 1 then put the fuses back strait away to save the 4 hour time delay to reset the code in display that did work. i noticed that everything seemed to be resetting its self . so i guess it was the computor restting itself. just a thought ! regards.

So you think by resetting the computer it may just work? i'll go outside now and try it and let you know how it goes. i do hope it works! i'm struggling with this thing and i tell ya going to shops and being a female and even insinuating that i might know a teenie weenie bit about my truck just gets me laughed at :)
thanks for the advice! i'll let ya know asap.

if yr a girl sondee, this could be a hard thing to do, now try yr hardest to sit in the car and press the buttons, try not to talk or get bored, try and hear something, it may be just a click from under yr legs if yr in the drivers seat(or fella's seat as we call it) if yr in the ladies seat..erm i mean passengerseat, does any noise come from the left, usually the side the kids hold yr hand on when walking with hubby!!! if you dont have a hubby or too many kids then is there anything at all happening noise wise????

sorry to be pedantic but certain relays omit souns and therfore you can track the sound to the distance the signal is travelling through the circuits, old fashioned way but beats explaining a multimeter to a female!!!!

lol only joking its common sense approach

gav diggs his self in for a barrage of abuse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hahaha :) thankfully i have a sense of humor dude. i've actually done that. I try to pay attention to all the noises in the car as quirky as that seems. I think you know what i mean when i say that the car can sometimes "talk" to you or give you hints as to what the deal is. No noises though

Here - I'll give you a bit of history.
I got the car used of course. its a 99. got a good deal on it because the eas was lit up like a christmas tree and that freaked the owner out. I did a bit of researching and thought well maybe i could fix this.

After about a year (and i hadn't fixed the eas yet) I started getting a total battery drain and every time i left my car near the airport to fly out - i would come back to a dead battery and then the doors stopped working (intermitten locking unlocking) until finally they would totally mess up and i had the "engine disabled" happen. Went to a repair place - he fixed the door problem. new part in the driver door. Windows stopped working..either right before that or after...cant remember but i believe it was way before. I should have researched the door thing and bought the part myself and put it in because they charged me $180 in labor for less than a full hour. Geeezz!

I got the program and cable from Storey Willson to reset the EAS. It has been great ever since. (i'm thinking she (previous owner) had kids who wanted to have fun with going up and down or play with the pretty lights...who knows - it works awesomely well now with no issues what so ever!

THe workshop was adamant about it being the switch plate but wanted to charge me upwards of $300 for the part. geezz again.. that wasn't including the labor!! i'm strapped on cash guys! so i searched online and found one for $132 - yay it finally came....so i thought...yay???? well guess what!!??! it didn't work either. On both Switchplates the light in it does light up. So here i am still looking for a solution and i don't want to spend another $180 per hour for trouble shooting (mind you these are the same guys who wanted to charge me $3500 for a new EAS and $1500 just to get rid of it not even thinking about just resetting it.)

Any ideas???

yep i have a clue to the puzzle. do you own a multi meter, if not you can pick one up fairly cheap( i take it yr in the US as you have stated $$$$ not££££) i got one from a place called screwfix for around £6. you need to look at the system logically, the witches will have power going to them in order to make a circuit, you just need to find out why power isn't getting there. test with multimeter!!.

also, you have checked the ecu beaneath the drivers seat for any plugs that are loose, they mak look connected but they need inspecting for corrosion and a good connection. also the fuses beneath the seat. there is a diagram on the flap to indicate which fuse is for what.

if all else fails i'm afraid you need a specialist to have a look, in the uk they charge around £40 to diagnose and advise of faults!!!

the doors also have an 'outstation' on them but i would suspect problems from only one side if one of these. probably take off the door panels and look for loose connections.

do the rear windows work on the button on the door and the centre console??

Indeed I do have a multimeter. I'll check the voltage coming in to the panel but i guess i assumed that if the light did indeed light up then there was power coming in to the switchpack. Where else should I test? Also, i did check the connections under the seat as well. Do you know which one is specifically for the windows/switch pack? everything looked good there though.
