Why do they always break when its raining?!! :(
Any words of advice on the following will be much welcomed folks. Pressed the down switch, window went down as usual, then having disapeared inside the door, the motor sounded like it was still running, and 'jumping cog' noises had me hitting the 'up' switch pretty quick. Guess what..... No up. just more nasty noises. another press and all was silent, no glass to be seen. Info on door trim removal methods, likely cause of window problem and repair tips would all be useful. Mk 2 Disco, but I'd guess the earlier models are very similar. Thanks in advance :)

One likely cause is the nylon rollers/sliders on the window regulator breaking up. Anyway you will need to take the door card off to see.
Some times the pressed still regulater comes apart at the spot welds but u can repair using a small nut/bolt or a rivit.
The rollers/sliders are not a replaceable LR part so you will have to make your own or get a replacement regulator. December's issue of LRO shows how to replace the regulator.

This sounds like the same problem I had , I let the garage fix it when it went in for a service and it cost about £100. When I got a look at the old linkage that had come off, I could have easily been welded it. So beware of garages who dont like to get there hands dirty and throw new parts at the problem.

Thanks guys :D, gives me an idea of what I'm likely to find when I start digging. All I need now is the word on door trim removal tricks and I'm up and running.
