Hi all, I have a Freelander 2, 2014 2.2 diesel. It went into limp mode with a fault reading reduced performance. My small code reader gave PO 480. The local garage checked and concurred it was an EGR valve. Replaced said valve but the problem and fault code is still there. Now they say they had to replace the short loom to the EGR because of a break in the wiring and the said break could have caused a spike in the ECM which may need replacing. Alternatively it could be a faulty new EGR!
Nearby LR dealer says it is unusual for the ECM to fail, more likely to be EGR or wiring.
Does anyone have any ideas? And if I just take out the electrical plug in the EGR will this shut it down temporarily for me to confirm this is the problem?

A good code reader/ diagnostic tool should allow the user to test the EGR valve by cycling it through it's full range.
However when the new EGR valve was installed, was an air path calibration carried out? This is an important step, or the ECM will probably damage the new EGR valve, as it doesn't know where the end stops are.
LR are quite right, the ECM seldom fails.

Hi Nodge 68,
I will go in and ask if they did the air path calibration.
If they have, is there any reason why I cannot take a new EGR valve and connect it direct to the existing wiring loom and , without actually fitting it and making sure it is properly earthed (I have a cable for this already) run the engine, I should then be able to see if the EGR is actually operating?
Thanks

There's no reason why you can't connect another EGR valve to the harness to see if it’s working. It's difficult to see directly though, as the valve is internal. However you should hear it indexing as it opens or closes.
There's no need to ground the body, from memory it's grounded through the harness.

Hi again,
I went to the local garage, the chap says they cycled and calibrated it when it was fitted. He has another EGR valve coming to swap or test against the (possibly) faulty one.
So we will see.
Thanks
