Just removed and blanked off my EGR valve, so should I
expect a varst improvement in performance?

The total cost to blank off the EGR and replace
the top hose was £18, so if I am now going to
get an extra couple of miles per litre it must be
worth it :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

If the EGR was working properly it'll make no real difference, it does however stop future problems with the EGR, which is a good thing, but you're now producing oxides of nitrogen (nox gasses) which contribute to acid rain, which is a bad thing:)

Blanking the egr stops the engine breathing its own ****e-worth cleaning the inlet manifold after blanking off as it should stay clean hence forth-what was the state of the inlet manifold?

If mine was anything to go by then crap state it was about 2mil thick. It took two days soaking and scrubbing to get clean then had at it with a dremil to make it all smooth on the inside. I did the same with the head when it got rebult as it was just as bad.

The ****ty build up is a mixture of soot (from the EGR) and engine oil (from turbo, breather, etc) you stop the soot but you'll still get some sludgy crap. If you drive them hard once in a while it keeps them clean ish and good quality injector cleaner makes a big difference. If you're looking for performance, I suspect you won't suffer too much from build up of ****:) if you were 90 and doing 3miles a week it'd cause all sorts of issues!!!

Not much but fuel economy will go up a wee bit.
If you want more power clean the intercooler and intake manifold then do a search on fuel injector pump tweak.

I've done this a few times, for myself, friends and customers. It's well worth it, you don't need to go mad just a slight tweak transforms them!

EGR on it's own, on mine, helped a little, but the best 'breathing' mod was de-cat and removal of the centre silencer .. oh, and addition of a snorkel using the standard airbox .. ;)

EGR s on td5s and td4s have a bigger effect cos the valve is a whacking great big obstruction in the air way, so if you remove the valve it breathes better. 300tdi ones don't obstruct the air way so no benefit from that respect. Unless its full of ****e. So with the obstruction removed the turbo spins up a little bit quicker and it revs a bit more freely. DeCat pipes have a similar effect, they remove an obstruction! Likewise the rest of the exhaust system. Just bear in mind that as of this year diesel catalysts became part of the mot. They don't check they work it's just the same old smoke test, but if it's meant to have one they should visually check that ones fitted, if it's not there its a fail. I believe for the first six months it's an advisory until people realise the regs have changed, that goes for a few new regs! But having said that my disco sailed thru without one! Tester blinkers fitted:) I wouldn't be too surprised if they don't bring in a visual check on EGR systems at some point. Some manufacturers already put an EGR flow sensor on of some kind, I got caught out on a Peugeot, blanked it of, put the EML on and went into limp home mode, dtc for EGR flow too low, grrrr bloody French ****!!!

Made a worthwhile difference to our TD5 pulls better and the engine is noticeably smoother. Not having some exhaust diverted to the inlet leaves more to drive the turbo?

Did my 300 tdi with a 2p piece-fits nicely in the join between stainless flexi where it meets inlet hose-rest of egr still fitted so visually looks no different. Can remove 2p for mot if needed.
Total cost 2p !

At the mo it's not an mot item, fingers crossed it won't be! Worst case it's likely to be a visual check and I doubt you'd see a two pence:) blanking it off won't affect the emissions as they test for smoke particles not gases! I copy the gasket and cut it out of plate and reassemble on 300s it 2p cheaper:) but you win hands down on labour:(

Never really thought of it like that? Possibly. The valve should be fully closed when flat out. So in that case no, but part throttle possibly a bit?!?!
I've got one on mine, it was noticeable first drive:)

There seem to be several different kits for the TD5, any recomended? What are the differences or will any do the job?

There seems to be an argument whether alloy is better than stainless? Honestly don't know, can't imagine it matters much! I think mines a terrafirma one (stainless)! Got it off eBay ages ago. The cheap ones don't have the pipe inlet swaged so the rubber hose could pop off! But they aren't very complicated as long as the welds ok the hole in the flange lines up with the hole in the manifold and is the same size you can't really go wrong, I'd just say go for a recognised name, not the cheapest! Likewise the most expensive can't really be that much better just maybe prettier:) just make sure it comes with a blank plate too cos you have to remove the link pipe and blank it off
