I have tried an extensive search on here and google and cannot find the answer.

The reason for the question has come up because I have an Auto 300tdi ES with EDC and have the 'Check Engine' light issue that is getting worse.

I have tried a different throttle position sensor, 2 x Air flow meters, a 4th injector from a working engine with no joy.

Now I also have gearbox issues since water got down the dipstick tube while playing in the floods last year so I brought a reconditioned gearbox from a mate which has been sitting in my garage until I get time to change it or the current gearbox give up. Just for info the current ones takes ages to change up when cold, often needing a boot to 4000 rpm to jolt it up, then its never a smooth box after that. I have done a couple of oil changes with no difference.

Then I get a PM from the guy I brought the Injector from, who is breaking his Disco, to say he has found another sensor on the gearbox. He gave me a fair price, but then I thought it must be on my spare gearbox, I will just swap it over.

But no such luck. I think I found the wire for the sensor, on the bracket where the 4th injector wire sits, but when I unplugged it the engine refused to start and idle.

This has lead me to a new question, as in the title, as I never knew there was a difference in the Gearboxes on the EDC models.

Can anyone shed some light on this please, as one very expensive gearbox may be up for sale. :(

boxes are the same ,bell housing has fixing for crank sensor iirc bell housings can be swapped but ensure you dont disturb pump housing on box often comes off with bell housing if your not careful , depth of tc bolt lugs from front face of bell housing and protrusion of rear of drive plate face from rear of engine need comparing with depth of tc ben 1 or 2mm greater to ensure proper fitting of tc

Cheers James. I think I understand that. So this box I brought can be used with my bell housing. Cheers. :)

should be able to, ensure oil that remains in box shows no black before fitting else life will be short, you have to ensure when box is fitted tc is pulled upto drive plate by securing bolts ,not pushed further back in to box whilst fitting so that when box is secured tc is still a mm or 2 awaay from drive plate

I heard about the TC being fitted to the box first then when box fitted to engine the bolts done up to flywheel through inspection hole.

This box I have is a £700 Ashcroft box brought in 2008 by a mate for his 90 he converted to auto. He used it weekends only for a few months then decided he was bored and broke the 90 for parts.

My mate brought the engine and box for his project.

This was never finished and after sitting on his galv chassis for a few years he abandoned that project sold everything and I brought the box.

It's probably only done a few hundred miles.

The oil looks new. I should know? It spilled out of the dipstick tube when I put it in my garage and didn't think to prop it up.

The point of all that was he fitted it wrong to start with and the 1st gearbox failed very quickly.

Ashcroft kindly replaced that along with some advice on fitting. :)
