Ok, so ignoring the facelift D2's, I see there are differences between the early pre-facelifts and the later versions. I've noticed the arches are different (more like D1s), the rear light set up is slightly different, the passenger area of the dash slightly different (grab handles like D1s) . . but are they any more worth noting? Is it worth shelling out a few more notes on a later pre-facelift or are the differences purely cosmetic?

Also, is there any more room under the later plastic arches for bigger tyres than the early versions or not?

Thanks

They did change the rear light layout. Dunno why, but all the lights are still there. Didn't notice the arches really. The grab handles are on models which don't have a passenger airbags. Even on facelift models. I think the differences you note are mainly differing trim levels.

Ah thanks I did wonder if it was an airbag option thing. I've only see it on an older 2000 model with old style arches so wasn't sure.

Ah ok cheers. I guess neither are more or less restrictive when it comes to squeezing rubber underneath them then. Good stuff.

There are no differences in pre-facelift cars at all throughout the age range it's just the specification that changes, so long as you compare model for model ie GS with GS; S with S etc they are identical.

Re the arches, they are identical also.

Mine doesnt have the arch rubbers or the sidestrips, IMO it looks cleaner.

Don't blame you either for not having the black trim, it all goes a funny grey faded colour, then it's £300.00 to replace it all, then in another 2 years back to grey again, that's why all the dealers wash the car then photo it, before the water dries!! then it looks black,
i am going to paint all my wheel arches same colour as the car as 3 of mine have faded on an 04 model,:)

To stop them going grey all you need is some black boot polish and one hours. They come up beautiful.

mine have gone rough, you would need a bucket load to fill all the pitting!
i have tried that before, back to black too! soon as it rains streaks every where!
Paint is the answer, take em off, a light sanding, filler primer then top coat of paint, ie satin black but i am going to paint them Bonnentti grey to match the car, as it is dark i think i will get away with it,then glue them back on,

You just need the right product to use. Not cheap, but works http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/engine-and-exterior/gtechniq-c4-permanent-trim-restorer/prod_851.html
