Maybe because mine is Eu2 which has different management.... and i've learned much since that ancient post especially after a aftermarket VDO failed on me in less than 3 years then made various live comparative tests with genuine, VDO and others... here's a more recent thread https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/faulty-maf.336600/#post-4372655 ...the learning curve is ascendent :cool:

I see, but what could be different apart from the packaging? 3 years is not that bad!

between around 5 = 15% difference more at the upper end of te curve and the response was also slower, that's with VDO cos i compared with cheap aftermarket too and te results were worst

I had to check it was possible but you can just write out the MAF in the fuel map. I’d rather pay out for that than £150 on a genuine LR part that is just as likely to fail as it’s production line neighbour

I doubt that you can do that on Eu3 cos the IQ is calculated based on MAF/rpm algorythm, on Eu2 it's possible cos it's MAP/rpm based and the MAF has effect only through the "back door" of the EGR management

OR to throw a spanner in the works, ( too quote someone else, the maf only effects the Egr) lol
 
If your not going to buy a genuine maf sensor just leave it unplugged the aftermarket ones do not last, so in reality you would be more out of pocket buying cheap

Siemens VDO are perfectly fine, but I’ll agree the £30 specials are a complete waste of time. What I’m saying is that rather than paying out £150 for a JLR MAF id prefer to have the MAF written out, and I’ve checked it is possible

You are right it is a pain Tom and that would be a good option for some to have, the vdo is ok but doesn’t last no where near as long as genuine

On Eu3?? ... Checked where? cos writing it out means a remap to Eu2 management so you rather pay £250 or so for a remap and run Eu3 injectors with Eu2 management? ... IMO that's a bodge,

I spoke to Storm Tuning and they said they can easily map out the MAF and they do it regularly for those running modified intakes where a MAF is not feasible. It's not a bodge, basically when you unplug the MAF it reverts to the use of the MAP to calculate air charge using factory defaults, it is this calculation that is modified to improve the running of the engine as the factory default with the MAF unplugged is not optimal. It has nothing to do with the injectors or EU2 management, but the same as EU2 engines the EGR does need to be removed.

I asked VDO directly. This is what they said:

"Hi Tom,
There are many outlets suppling copies into the market place. Our products are manufactured on the same production lines as the OE product. We purchase from the main factories and neutralise the products removing all OE marking and Logo’s for legal reasons but this helps us Identify products being returned claiming warranty. There is no difference in the quality and the performance of the products that VDO supply into the After-Market. I have attached a word document with some images."


Essentially they don't do anything special or differently for JLR.

Your choice to believe who you want, i choose my cousin and my brother in law(who are working in parts manufacturer factory, one of them in OE section) rather than believing those who are selling theyr's products also i know well my own tests so i stick to my findings on this regardless of what VDO sais... as about that MAF thing on Eu3 as long as the original fuel map uses MAF/rpm to calculate the IQ and the MAP/rpm is default even modifying the original MAF default value in the fuel map the management will still be on default MAP/rpm for IQ caclulations and that's the way the Eu2 management works... so it's a mixed up thing which IMO is a kind of "bodge" without saying that the engine will not run well.... i like things to be as close to the best setup as possible maybe that's why i seem so obtuse about this and i know that if mine was Eu3 engine i would prefer to put a genuine MAF rather that turning the fuel map upside down for double the price of the MAF... those who are putting modified intakes are using theyr's vehicles mostly off road or competitions and they dont care about EGTs or the engine's longevity, all they want is good throttle response in deep mud and uphill(at least those who i know)

eventually ask VDO what are they doing with MAFs which are failing the strict tests imposed by LR but still ISO compliant... do they bin them or selling them as OEM... cos other also reputable manufacturers are selling them as OEM as long as they are ISO compliant and within generally accepted limits which are more ''flexible" than what a vehicle main dealer wants to put his sticker on a box

though i'm not claiming i'm right hence my purple signature :cool:

I’m not saying you’re wrong, a company like that will own many different smaller companies. What goes on on reality at each may be different to what they’d like.

How many of each VDO/JLR airflow sensor did you compare?

Two genuine against at least 6 others on my vehicle and 2 others... i compared the genuines between them as well and they were 99% the same while VDO's compared to each other were all over the place with different reading curves and i told you how they were compared to genuine... beside my tests there are many reports from owners who felt real improvement just by simply fitting genuine LR sensor instead of VDO aftermarket
