Okay, utter novice, plan is to drive my range rover to Sweden, with a car trailer behind, drive down 4k of very overgrown forest tracks, then cross a 500m bog, recover a vehicle, then turn around and drive all the way home. Any advice? :croc:

what vehicle? how deep has it sunk? how long has it been there? what are you intending to use to free it? How many vehicles are you taking to do it? Have you any experience of driving on bogs?

It weighs 1/2 ton, taking a Brian James A series car trailer, getting it out and on the trailer is covered, I have no bog experience yet, starting vehicle is below, will be modified. 1 vehicle, 1 trailer, possibly 8 people (with 4 following in a normal car) .

Photos of terrain to be crossed will follow in a mo :D

Anyone know anywhere I can practice in South Wales? Wetter bog the better. Planning on dump truck tyres for the muddy bits, 60mm(ish) lift for arch clearance on spring spacers, combination of capstan/normal winch, a few tubes and hefty bumpers with anchor points all round, sleds instead of wheels on the trailer. Any ideas guys?

sell range rover but a uni mog.also give much more detail.Get winch-TIRFOR NOT LECCY BURN OUT ONES!!!!!!Take pics, check you can import the vehicle is it over10 years old?

Also, in addition, 20 fibreglass waffle boards, also wheel extensions for the rear with spade lug rims extending past the arches. :)

Hi,

Reason for the range rover is that it is a 3000 mile round trip, and we need to seat a minimum of 4/5 people, Unimog for that kind of journey would be a bit of a killer. Ive brought a few of these vehicles across before, so import is no problem, just not really at liberty to say what it is at the moment, because there are other buyers after it... ;)

Thinking of a leccy winch to bolt on the front, in addition to a tirfor and ground anchors, the driving plan is to go around the tree line so there are anchor points available as a safety measure.

**** the range rover off.Get a crysler voyager and travel in style.Winch stuck beasty out by hand or pay local farmer. If it stuck enough rr wont get it out-4 might, do you have 4?

Did you say chrysler voyager and luxury in the same sentance?! :D

It will not need to be dragged out, it will be lifted/recovered on to the trailer with no driving effort, so the only issue is crossing the boggy area with a car trailer behind, then crossing back over it with a car trailer with 1/2 ton on board.

This terrain is what I am looking at, although the area is not as flat, as the pictures show..

Ive been looking at the winches on ebay and did think that some of them were probably not the best quality, but I dont know what has been tried and tested, so thats where you guys come in hopefully! Thinking about the possibility of a capstan winch on the front too, what have you guys got on yours?

you have no experience of this sort of thing, the vehicle has been buried for 4 or 5 decades plus it doesn't look like you know what kit to take to recover this mysterious vehicle.are any of the bods you are taking recovery mechs,it doesn't sound like it though.

Why do you think I am here mate, any advice gratefully accepted, otherwise I will just have to make decisions based on google and youtube.

many many waffle boards, build a tripod above the barndoor and use tirfor to lift via a pulley, do not think it will be able to drag it. could the trailer be put alongside the barndoor and then use winch/tirfor to drag just the trailer out, saving the weight of the rangey from sinking. there are many pine trees about - chainsaw and create a pathway of logs with waffle boards on top all tied together. That is how I would retrieve it and yes i do have many years experience of recovery.

Some proper advice at last! Thank you!:D

Theres a guy on ebay selling 20 GRP waffle boards for £400, think thats the best deal ive found so far, was thinking about making up some steel ones, but they would probably be weight prohibitive in large numbers.

Hoisting upwards the plan was scaff bars underneath the chassis where the axles go (The chassis is sound there) then smaller (5ft) tripods either side to winch upwards one end at a time, then place on trestles at either end so it is suspended @2ft6 out of the bog, enabling the trailer to be slid under it. Drop it down, then secure, then drive back.

What do you think of the range rover, its not huge undulations to roll over, so huge suspension travel is not necessary, but grip is needed. Was thinking of big footprint tyres, but they would need a whole bunch of mods, so the dumper wheels/tyres with outer steel lug wheels as a bolt on extra for the 500m bog crossing? Will be doing a lot of testing as soon as I find somewhere in S. Wales to get stuck in! :)
