it stops a x head screw driver coming out of a x head screw head. As yu turn the screw driver, the tendency is for the driver to rotate and lift out of the head, this is called "cam-out", as the interaction between the screwdriver bit and head acts like a cam. It is a consequence of the torque required to rise up the sides of the screw head being less than the torque required to turn the screw.

early Philips screws were designed to cam-out, as early automatic screwdrivers could not torque-sense, when tight. It isnt required with later drivers and is now invariaably seen as a bad point, but it was used originally as a safety and load sensing system.

Oh ho - more surfing I found this:

From that I found this in the UK;

And is this stuff the same as their "valve lapping compound"?

They also mention using graphite - that might explain why I inherited a small blower of graphite from the father-in-law :)

I don't know if any of the above are the same as "Drive Grip" though -that stuff looks like it expands.

An old trick used to be to put some fine grinding paste on the screwdriver tip as that would improve grip and help prevent rounded out heads

so let me get this straight, every time you want to put a screw in you have to put a bit of that in the screwhead ? im a carpenter and never heard of it or needed it as long as you use the right bit for the screws your using they shouldnt slip out
