drive flange woes

right got another new drive shaft and drive member (not heavy duty this time as it wont fit with the hubcentric alloys)

there is evidence of some fretting on the old (1 month old!) 24 spline shaft and it looks like fretting has stripped out the spline on the member.

Now there appears to be no evidence of lubrication on the drive shaft end. Theres plenty of oil in the diff and the l/h side has oil on it.

How does the oil migrate along the shaft? is it just carried along by centrifugal force? could there be a blockage somewhere? Im contemplating chucking a load of 80w90 in the r/h side of the axle before i slide the shaft in. Any thoughts?

:)

later axles use an oil seal in the stub which stops oil getting to the members. iirc you can change it to the earlier setup.

sounds like yours is a secondhand later rear axle and one side has a shagged seal when the other works and blocks oil.

i'd change it to the orig setup which lets oil get to it

im thinking... rip out the seal / drill it / stab it with a screwdriver

actually theres no seal on the outer ends of the hub on the side that keeps stripping. its a sloppier fit than wolf in that regard!

i've not done it, but i think you just remove the inner seal..i think running dry has killed your old stuff. check your other side though and see why that's wet. maybe someones squirted ep90 on it

disc axle uses thinner flange with oil seal in stub 300 tdi on(prone to wear on drive member due to lack of lube)drum axle 200 tdi and previous axle has no oil seal in stub but uses outer hub seal to keep oil from wheel bearings , unless you have and inner oil seal fitted rather than std grease seal frc8221

getting confused myself. is this right then.

if you have the inner stub oil seal (stops oil going to splines) you can remove it and the splines get oil. Being aware if you drive on steep angles diff oil will probably leak more)

if you wanted to allow oil in the bearings as well, then also remove FRC8222, the seal just before the lockwasher and nuts. If you do this then it's best to use RTC3511 instead of FTC4785 (inner hub seal) as the latter is a grease seal and the oil would leak out?

grease the shaft and splines before fitting them land rover don't even grease them on the puma and they wear quickly but not at the rate ure going through them ..lol :rolly:
