Hi all looked at a Discovery TDi yesterday and all looks good apart from a pretty bad leak from the front Diff. also seems to be a lot of fluid on the axle and generally wet around the front end of the underside of the vehicle
What could it be? Is it loads of money ? also is it hard to do?
Or is it too much agg and better to look at another if the owner wont put it right?
D:D

The diff cover has probably rusted through. You should be able to patch it up (I did my rear diff cover about 2 years ago and it's been fine). I'd guess the stuff on the axle is probably engine oil that's leaked out over the years - it might just be what's been spilled when the oil filter has been changed.

depends how much you wanna spend, wot yu use yo disco fur.
I been quoted prices of between £100 and £270 to replace the rear diff pan on my disco - have a look at this....

If you do a lot of off roading then a pipe cap as replacement diff pan and diff guard is a good alternative - cost of diff pans are about £25-£30. price of pipe cap is circa £40. I wud think fitting costs to be similar - but yu wont need a guard any more:).

cheapest option is to clean inside and outside of diff pan with petrol and use metal mastic as a filler - seems to work well. If you fit guards, they seem to exacerbate corrosion of the pan:eek:.

have y'awl tried that expanding foam?
ave just used some to bung up some holes in me brickwork. am sure if yer tried it on yer diff it would block the hole up and have the added advantage of quitening yer diff down if its at all noisey

My 'EX' never did ANYTHING 'ace' . . . (that's why she's an 'EX' :D )

Stop diff leaking oil - easy peasy, drain the flippin oil ole chap - sorted, NO leaks

I heard that the MOD are experimenting with filling 'em with silicone gel, don't leak, never needs changing and is non combusti ..... don't burn too well !!
