Wotcha. I used to be able to put my key in the drivers or passengers door and activate the central locking.

I was with the missus' dad freeing the diff lock the other week when he noticed the alarm plug was not connected to the rear of the sounder so he mentioned this and plugged it back in for me (I've noticed this before but read about the Disco alarms being a pain in the R's so never plugged it in my self.)

It's not been playing up, it's been fine so far HOWEVER I have dogs and in other Rovers (so I belive, in my old M reg 400 anyway) you can turn the immobiliser on but leave the alarm off by locking the doors with the key and keeping the key turned for 10 seconds before removing, which would allow me to leave the dogs in the car without the alarm going off.

I can't see how this would be linked but since the alarm was plugged back in I cannot use the key to lock the door, the key turns, nothing happens

I've tried unplugging it again but the alarm just goes off and it was about 5 mins again before I could turn it off by putting the key in the ignition.

So right now I cannot leave the dogs in the car even to nip into a shop unless I leave the car unlocked. And ideas? I need to sort this

Cheers

Can't answer all your problem, but can confirm that locking with the key seems to over-ride the sensor, so dogs can be left in the car. (No need for the 10 seconds)

Always open the door with the fob, otherwise all sorts of problems.

Don't do as I did, and leave the keys and the dogs in the car. One Springer bounce and click, he locked all the doors!

The only time (so-far) my key has failed to lock the door is when the battery is flat.

Reading other threads, it seems Landrover locks like WD40!

I have a similar problem started locking the doors with the key so my dog would'nt set the alarm off , somtimes i opened the doors with the key and somtimes used the fob ,and now somtimes when i try to lock it with the fob the central locking works but then after seconds pops back up , ithen try to lock it with the key after pushing all the door lock button down and somtimes this works but somtimes it dosent, its a sterling alarm , i was about to take it to Turners alarm people in Durham just before christmas but it started to work ok again ,but its a pain when it wont lock and you send 20 mins or so trying to lock it ,any ideas ?

1. Something wrong with the lock barrel it may have seized (which can happed if you use the CL all the time) and not fully turning. The alarm has nothing to do with the locking of the door.

2. Using the key to lock he drivers door will isolate the ultrasonic sensor part of the alarm.

3. Unpluging the alarm sounder will not activate the alarm system but will sound the sounder as it is self-contained with battery backup. So when the plug was replace the sounder battery started to re-charge unpluging removes the charge and sounds the sounder.

4. When the door pin will not stay down ie. pops up again thats a sign that a slight adjustment is required on the CL actuator.

5. If the door pin rises but drops back half way that is a symption of the small spring in the lock has broken.

The last to are n/a for you stretchie and based on a D1 with a two button locking fob, as we don't know what year or model of disco you have.

i have a 97 300tdi an had the same problem sort of an all i did was disconnect the interior sensor an now it don't go off when the dogs in the car an i can use the remote all the time, and leave the windows down slightly for the dog
don't think it will affect security too much? coz the immobilliser is still on, an i wouldn't try to nick a landy with a dog in the boot, would you?

A good dose of WD40 over a couple of days and it's all sorted now

; )

Thanks for the suggestions

My car is not a Landrover, it's a Punto, but my central locking problem is very similar as described in this thread. My door buttons (2-door vehicle) have started to pop up intermittently when locking with the key. (This 1998 Punto has to be locked with the key.) If I ~gently~ close the driver's door the CL actuates ok, but if I slam the door shut as normal, the button goes down a fraction then pops up again. However, it doesn't always happen. It's only started doing it in the last couple of weeks and I have had the vehicle for nigh on ten years.

This is the second time I have seen WD40 recommended as a possible solution to the problem, but where did you spray it? I can take one or both door cards off no problem. But aren't the units/solenoids etc factory sealed?

Thanks!

Before taking door cards off and making more work than needed, I just sprayed it right into the key hole and on the key, insert and turn a few times, did this over a couple of days and it started working again.

I am planning to take the door cards off and have a proper look and possibly give a good greasing up if needed but I'll wait until the weather picks up

Some further information that might help somebody diagnose the problem: I've discovered that if I press HARD against the closed door in the region of the door lock (in the area where the key barrel is) before turning the key to lock it, then locking is always successful So this sounds to me like the adjustment has gone out of kilter a tad?

I finally bought a can of WD-40 and sprayed it on. The result is fantastic! The failure-to-lock problem has gone away. Where I sprayed: lock mechanism in trailing edge of open door; down past the door lock button (using the thin tube that comes with the WD-40); and on the lock post on the car body.
