Hi,

I'm sorry if this sounds like a very blonde question but I have an F reg Land Rover 90 and i know its a 2.5 but i don't know if its a 200 or 300 TDI.
I need to buy a clutch and glow plugs for it.
Would anyone be able to explain the difference between the two.
Kind Regards
Sarah

could be a 2.5 normally aspirated or a 2.5 turbo diesel both engines are normal fitment for a landy of that age , could be retrofitted with a tdi, 200 has seperate auxilliary belts driven the pas pump and alternator ,300 only 1 belt driving all

On an F-reg, the original engine would most likely be the 19J 2.5 turbo. You can identify this by the rocker cover being smooth on the top. A lot of them were replaced with the later tdi engines.

19J engines got a fairly bad reputation which wasn't entirely deserved. The earlier ones had some problems, but most of those will be really most sincerely dead by now. The later ones are perfectly fine as long as you maintain them properly, if a little slower than a tdi.

I think you are right about the maintenance, 19j are not tolerant of neglect, everything needs to be about right.

I think their reputation is worse than the reality too. Admittedly mine is low mileage, and well maintained, but I have been working it hard since 2008 and it hads never missed a beat! :)

I'm sure working a 19J hard is good for it (as long it's generally in a good condition). I took mine to Normandy last year and driving it heavily loaded along hilly French motorways seems to have blown some crap out of the engine. On the way home it was definitely a bit quicker, quieter and more responsive. Probably came from working hard on the way up the hills, then almost coasting on the way down. I got about 25-26mpg during the trip :)

Whenever I'm going any distance, I make a point now of running it up to 70 a few times on the motorway (I normally cruise at 60-65) to give the engine a bit of a workout.
