The VMs. I think are also used in Jeeps, and they were rubbish.
I only meant Land Rovers as in Series and Ninety One/Ten, I don't engage with Range Rovers and the like, and never have.
I find it quite hard to think how you could improve on the 4 and 6 cylinder indirect injection Perks that were around at that time.
I have had quite a number, in Land Rovers and Tractors, always thought they were fantastic engines, Gear driven, robust, and economical.
Actually the VM in the Cherokee was quite a good engine and quite reliable. It was thirsty though and anything over 60 swallowed fuel like it was towing a tanker trailer behind it, some of that would be aerodynamics though which on the Cherokee were lacking:)

You going to give us any background as to what you know about Land Rovers, diesel engines, or both?

I notice your page is extremely short on detail, location, age, previous vehicles, etc.
i would ignore Mr S nut, all the posts he is making are simply to try and get a rise, I think this is probably the whole point.

My mate's was rubbish. Spent more time off the road than on it in the 4 years he had it.

I had one as my main vehicle for 11 years, very little ever went wrong with it in that time and the only two issues with it were ride comfort on long journeys and fuel consumption (30MPG max)

Have nothing against the Perkins. We have one in the JCB fastrac. Although the one in the Montego is underpowered and lacks torque vs a Tdi. The L-Series that replaced it was superior as well.

Funny you say about the VM’s. I’d say they are brilliant engines. And referencing your earlier point. They are actually marine diesels… used in boats. Which I’d have thought would meet with your approval. 🙂

Maybe you should be more clear then. What was your point??
Keep the 6 cly or put in something big, no point in putting in some old nackered rover engine if you are not going to keep the 6 pot rover.

Anyway bits for the 6 pot are readily available from Spain...

They were used in boats, and are maybe better as a marine engine, but there aren't many in boats now.
My mate had one in his Cherokee, it was pretty bad, he removed several of the cylinders looking for the problem, but it turned out to be a cracked block, so he sold it for spares.
Another friend also has a Cherokee, he has the 4.0 straight 6 petrol, LPG converted, and it has been brilliant, he has had it since new, about 30 years, it has a galvanised chassis, and he has had almost no problems with it in the entire time he has had it.

Have you been in a Cummins 6cyl turbo powered land rover?

Yer it would make your ears bleed, then theres the cost & time.....

Air clutch set up, conversion plate, change tranny to 1.003, all new mounts
convert to 12v, hi/low air shifters, fuel pump, cooling pipes, oil pick up mod, gear shift stick. Higher 5th gear new clutch
modify the props then you do all that n snap a halfshaft uprate the half shafts n cv joints better just do the diffs
so add another 3k before you know it youve spent a load of cash to find out that the brakes are pishh & it wont stop
worth a toss, but you've had a nice stainless exhaust made so it looks pretty but sounds great but sits with the nose
down so you'll need new suspension. Before all that youll want to do belts/gaskets seals bla bla...........

Fucken clown lol

I like the 4.0 Jeep engine, had one myself in an XJ Cherokee.

The VM's have been used in loads of vehicles though. And where in Euro Jeeps right up until 2018. We have one in a classic Range Rover. The RRC was owned by my Mum and learnt to drive in it. Owned from almost new.

Oddly I liked the VM in the RRC not some much the 492 in the 87-90 RRC but the 2.5 425 was quite a grunty unit..
120hp 300nm wasn't bad certainly better than the 93hp the 2.4 492 produced and a fir bit more torque than the 200tdi

Keeping on top of the cooling system is a must, if you change the headgaskets the heads must be retorqued after around 500mi, it's seldom if ever done..

I found on more than 1 occasion the threads in the block are weak, helicoiled a few...... pain in the arse!!

But the LR diesels aren't immune to HG issues AND you don't need to change a timing belt on the VM's so eh horses for courses!

My dads 89 RRC 2.4 was ok never had an engine issue, the body rotted off the engine, at 70k and 12yrs old........ :vb-groan2:

Good luck finding a VM powered RRC nowadays though, near impossible..
