The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculating) valve is a piece of poor engineering that LR put on their cars in order to pass the then current, pollutions regs for certain parts of the world.

It was bad when it was new and didn't get any better so most people who want to improve the efficency of their engines remove the valve and put a blanking plate in place.

To optimise this mod you will need a new intercooler top hose and this might be a good time to get a set of silicone hoses for the turbo (the original rubber ones are a bit of a weak point), which will include a new top hose.

It is a worthwhile mod, it will slightly improve performance (depending on how much malfunctioning your current EGR valve is doing) but much more importantly it will stop the tar-like marmite substance from getting into your engine. When you do the mod, check your inlet manifold and you'll see what I mean.

Also when you do this work, it is advisable to clean the inlet manifold and wash out the intercooler at the same time, for optimum benefit.

Cheers for that, seen a kit that has the plate and top hose in it, is it easy to fit or something i should get a pro to do for me ??? I hate being a newbie :confused:

It's a straightforward job to do, you do it easy;)

Just do a search on here for 'EGR blanking plate' or similar. Should take about 1 hour.

Try if you can to start thinking about doing your own work rather than using garages, the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself is VERY gratifying.
 
Like your new car, think you did very well there. Big Chap is right about the egr, get rid of it asap. Good luck with your new motor, it really is value compared to those Pretender things.

Cheers for the comments :D Its nice and clean although under acceleration i

had a bit of black smoke !!! Gonna do an injector purge tommorrow and order the filters etc. Also the auto box does not seem so urgent in changing up through the gears so will check the fluid levels :rolleyes:

Hiya LL, Re 1. you may find a new air filter will help re the smoke;

& 2. Are you familiar with the specific procedure for checking the autobox fluid level?? If not, let me know.

Incidently it's a 4 speed auto, with a toque lock-up which occurs at 52mph - it'll feel like it's changing into another gear but it's actually just the TC locking-up, as it should. They change into 4th at about 28mph so it's a bit slow, so in towns and other slow speed work you might care to considor putting it into 3 rather than D, so it holds third for longer, say up to 35-40mph. It'll feel better if you do.

Also, if it's catted, you can improve pick-up significantly by de-catting the exhaust. Costs £21.25+vat, but more of this once you've done the service.

Just ordered the service pack you recommended so i can get that sorted out :D
Then ill do all the fluids etc just to be sure;) and yeah ill be getting a de cat pipe and egr kit very soon for it.

Will also be looking to upgrade the anti roll bars and maybe the springs to beef th suspension up a little too !!!! Maybe even a lift kit but not 100% sure yet Not used to the body roll so will do something about that :eek:

All in all though not a bad motor and i even got the Haynes manual for it and it shows how to for everything :cool:


May even get some off road use as the mrs said " we can go do one of those off road track things now !!!! " She never knew it was going to be used for that anyway :eek: :D ;) ;)

1. I think you'll be pleasntly surprised how well they go for a 2tonner!! when they're well looked after.

2. If I may, just bear in mind, for off-roading stiffer arb's are not clever as they restrict axle movement. Also, high centre of gravity, 2 tons and relatively soft suspension = body roll.

If you fancy more off-road then you'll probably have to accept onroad compromises.

Yeah ill get better performance out of her dont worry lol but its good enough for a 13yr old 2 tonne heavyweight !!!!!

Think ill be looking at a suspension package and just renewing the standard worn anti roll bar :D

I use ramps for mine, because I need to raise it to get underneath (too much good living!!) if I'm working on one end or the other, otherwise I drive up steps made of a series of paving slabs - not very high but enough for me to get me belly underneath :D :D :D

So is it a 300tdi ??? or is it the ealier model , how do i tell :confused:
 
get yerself a bottle jack from machine mart or somewhere like that rated to at least three tons and a set of axle stands.You might wanna crawler as well.All in that little lot will cost yer bout a nifty.

To answer your Q in the usual tortious and roundabout way...:rolleyes:....

The 200TDi and 300TDi motors usually have different gearboxes -
the 200TDi has the LT77 gearbox with reverse to the left and up.
the 300TDi has the R380 gearbox with reverse to the right and down.

they also, normally have different dashes and the 300TDi has two fan belts and the 200TDi has one.

Its an auto!:p
 
If it has a v belt it is a 200, if it has a toothed serpentine belt it is a 300 Tdi.

200Tdi & 300Tdi Discovery engines had the wide black cover, look for the engine number

200Tdi should start with 12L
300Tdi starts 16L

you'll find it on the engines right hand side on a horizontal surface between the cylinder head below number 1 [very front] injector & the injection pump, just above the front cam follower access plate.

300TDi has (usually) got a yellow oil cap and dipstick end
200TDi is green.
