Discovery wandering after fitting new trailing arms :(

Or the drop arm itself. I had one come in (complaining of wandering) and the retaining nut was finger tight:eek::eek:

Did it back up to it's 175nm plus renewed it's retaining washer and all was well.

Indeed, not an easy one to spot initially. Lower steering column prone to wear, and box can have lots of play, sometimes beyond adjustment...

Whereabouts are you? Might be worth getting someone to have a looksee .. an experienced Landrover owner might just spot something less obvious .. ;)
 
I live in Manchester, Will try and get it on my mates ramps this weekend. When I fit my new bushes I will give a good look at everything. But if anyone is local they are more than happy to have a look for me :) My steering box has had a very very slight leak since I bought it 3 yrs ago and on the last MOT it failed on a front wheel bearing but my friend just tightened the nut on it and it passed. Can't wait to find out whats been causing this problem. Tyres all at correct PSI.
 
Is your axle straight? Are both wheels in the same place within the wheel arches? Even a small difference makes for a wander on a 4x4.
Trailing arm snapped off of the rear axle casing on mine, had it recovered to the so called local specialist collected her in the dark, didn't notice anything til it was wet then one day and I realized I was having to steer slightly right to go straight!
Needless to say this was an MOT failure, and I am sure the 'specialist' thought I would take it back to him, as he had mentioned several times how much 200tdi engines go for.......:mad:
 
Mr Noisy I might take you up on that offer. I will fit my new front radius bushes this weekend and if it's still wandering will give you a call.

Whats the best way to line both sides up? as in make then equal? I just fitted both arms and tightened them up as much as I could. Thought they would just pull the back end straight?
 
Hi mate yeah no worries I'll pm you my number.

The landy setup doesn't have any built in adjustment, basically one assumes the chassis is square so you just tighten everything right up. Any final adjustment is made with the steering.

However, there's no shame in putting a landy on a Hunter (wheel alignment rig) to check the car for square. Washers can be fitted in the chassis end of the trailing arm either with on the bush or ideally the trailing arm pin, same for the front radius arms etc.

Adjustable panhard rod can be bought, advise the QT product despite the large premium.

Most large Kwik Fits have Hunter installed, and it could well be worth a look, but gimme a shout first and we'll have a look/drive.

Not sure exactly when I can help but it's no problem to do so if we can find a time!

okay cheers dude, just noticed that when i brake my car either goes to the right or left!! but sometimes it will be fine. This is realy doing my head in now :( Hurry up weekend so I can stick my car on the ramps n check the front again.
 
Sorry it's been so long. Just started a new job so been revising ect

I had my steering box tightened the other day and thats seems to of made 80% difference. Jacked my car up and both front wheels have play in the wheel bearings!! Should I try and tighten the nut up to take the play out the bearing or Just get both wheel bearings replaced?
 
Tighten the nut properly and see how it feels. This is where experience and skill are required, if it "feels" good and is nice and greasy/oily it should be fine.

Visual inspection is often worthwhile also.

Glad you're getting somewhere. As Mr Noisy says, tighten the bearings first, that's one of the god things of them! See how it drives, if it doesn't work, or 'goes off' again in a few days, remove and at least visually check the bearings ..

There is the off-chance that one of the bearing pairs is broken .. My nearside rear felt fine when checking, no side-play or anything, but the inner race had disintegrated! Screwed up the stub axle etc, so even if it tightens OK and drives OK, try to keep an eye on it. ;)
 
Yeah thats true actually, a knackered bearing will tighten up and may feel alright, but ti wont take long before it is loose again, whereas a good bearing stays tight!

also, if you do fit new bearings, keep checking them every few days cos they need regular tightening until they have bedded in!
