when starting my disco from cold oil light stays on for about 1.5 - 2 seconds it also does this when warm but has been standing a little while, how ever if i start it straight away after turning it off it goes out almost immediately is this normal?? i have just had the oil changed and im sure it didn't stay on for that long before.

On the two TD5's that I run the oil light goes out imediately irrespective of hot or cold engine.

im sure mine did before the oil change why would this make a difference??

Until we know exactly what oil was put in and whether it was correctly refilled, it's difficult to comment. Have you checked to see if the oil level is correct on the dipstick?

yep the level is correct on the dipstick i also checked first thing in the morning to see if it had risen overnight, it hadn't still correct level. the oil was 5w 30 semi synthetic

Well all of that sounds right. I'd be inclined to do nothing right now other than keep an eye on it. The oil pressure switches sometimes go faulty but it sounds like your situation is very minor right now. They are cheap enough on TDi's don't know about TD5, but assuming the right one is cheap I'd get one in stock, just in case.

i just don't know why its started doing it after an oil change?? i think i'll pick one up tomorrow and fit it anyway thanks for the reply

If things changed following an oil change I would imagine the oil filter would be the most likely cause .
Even if genuine etc it could be faulty - allowing oil to drain away when engine is stopped and this then causes the delay in oil pressure build up on starting . Restarting straight away doesn't give time for this to happen so oil light goes out promptly .
Just a thought .

Have come across the problem in cars where the non genuine filter didn't have the valve fitted to stop the oil draining out of the filter with the engine stopped .
This often caused a rattle on start up while the oil pressure was buiding up.
Is yours a Td5 ? they have 2 oil filters.

yeah its a td5 i have changed the rotary filter as well again non genuine. so would i have to change both filters again? would this do damage to the engine??

Would agree with the biglad - have often seen vehicles on which the oil light was slow to go off but they ran for years without coming to any harm .
If the engine isn't revved to encourage the light to off quicker all should be fine .

its a "Long shot", but new oil is thicker than used as we know...........and its "possible" the oil pump is on its way out

Also dont get the comment ref the oil draining out, the filter is near enough vertical, so its not that.

What year is your TD5 ?

I agree the point about oil draining out wouldn't appear to be very important as filter is near vertical :
its just that in the past I know owners had problems with rattles on start up/oil light slow to go off which were solved by using a genuine filter (not on Land Rovers )
And from what I could find out the reason was the gen filter had a valve which the others didn't .
And some of the filters were fitted reasonably vertical . Was a mystery to me why it made such a difference - and still is .
