Discovery 2 ABS warning lights

This is my first post on this forum and I have NO idea what fixes there are in the archives.

But I may still help...

1. Did they come on intermittently? (if you turn off the engine and restart are they gone and then reappear some time later?)

2. Next, get the codes read.

3. If the code(s) have anything to do with "shuttle valve electrical fault" then you may have an electrical issue within your ABS pump/modulator.

4. If you do, there is a popular fix to do that. Some members probably have done made a tech article or "how to" on it already. Here is a link to my "how to" on repairing that electrical fault.

ABS Mod - Land Rover Club V.I.

Good Luck.

I'm new to this so you might get 2 post as i was not logged on.
I had the same fault on my Disco II and as Josh said it was the Shuttle valve in the ABS module. I had it changed with one from 'Skan 4X4 breakers' which has cured the fault. I did find some on Ebay for £120 and service exchange for about £200 with 2 year warranty so its not as bad as some stories of £800. Sorry I did not get the fault code so it might not be the same for you.

it is most likley just a wheel sensor or a worn wheel bearing but if it does turn out to be the shuttle valve the shuttle valve can be replaces with out changing the the modulator
but what you need to do is get it pluged in to see what the fault is

if you fill in where you are in your profile it will help if there is any one in your area with the equipment to help

List of possible causes below (Testbook will narrow it down)

1. Worn or non-genuine brake shoes (said to be no.1 cause in US). Rattle or squeal can apparently activate sensors. One user reported that a rattle from a loosely secured brake pipe had set his off.
2. Faulty earth connection behind n/s headlamp.
3. Failed sensor.
4. Damaged wiring.
5. Damp or dirty harness connector at hub (replacement sensors now supplied with direct connection to ecu).
6. Early SLABS ECU software. Replacement with later part no SRD500070, which has better software with a wider tolerance, may solve problem.
7. Badly seated replacement sensor. Apparently may be difficult to seat the rubber O ring correctly on the Disco II, and this can cause the sensor bracket to bend and give incorrect gap. One poster (Eight-in-a-Vee I think) suggests replacing the rubber seal with a very small amount of silicone sealer.
8. ABS modulator switches. It is possible to service the switches without replacing the modulator (LR service kit)
9. ABS modulator unit. Expensivo! Probably not economic to replace on most cars.
10. Play in bearings
11. Modulator caps recall. There was a recall to replace the modulator unit caps with thicker ones. Part no B148.
12. Unequal tyre pressures.

Get the fault checked on Testbook or similar.
If it's shown as a wheel sensor fault check for hub play. If no play try replacing sensor. If there is play replace hub (c/w new sensor fitted).
If that doesn't work and it's an early model, try later model SLABS ecu.
If it's shown as the ABS modulator there are various things to try (like replacing brake fluid, hitting it with hammer, repair kit) - do a search.

hello mate my 99 disco 2 was in land rover yesterday for the same thing i feared the worse as last week i to was told it could be the modulater which bought from land rover is 1256.00 plus vat plus fitting but turned out to be a loose abs senser which they rectified for me although they will have to be replaced in the near future cost me 46 quid for a diagnostics check .

What could be wrong???

ive just had my landrover motd last week i knew all my lights where on the failed due to the abs lights been on.they put there testbook on it for it to say front abs sensor fault . ok i bought one hade it fit they cleared the abs fault . that was ok until he drove it 200 yards lights came back on . backn on the test book .was then told could be ecu (450) could be hub (160) could be shuttle valve (300) i took it home drove it around far a week .then i had time to look at it myself i cracked the first wheel nut off to find it was not tight second one not tight .i tightened them all up had fault cleared now it mended !!!!!!!!!!!!! loose wheel nuts

Congrats..'random first post jibberish in the middle of another thread' trophy of the day.

I had the very same 3 lights a few months ago. Took it to Landrover dealer and for the princely sum of £89 they ran diagnostics and had a manual go over the front end. Turned out to be a worn front hub but I also needed the ABS sensor replaced, which was a fraction of the total bill. For a non landrover hub, plus the sensor and labour it was approx £300.
I'd get them to check just the sensor to start with and if the diagnostics say its faulty start just with fixing that before you agree to any other work.
Best of luch with it.

I have a '51' plate disco i brought a couple of months ago 2 days after buying it i had the the chime and the three warning lights come on. Stopped engine ignition off and restarted all lights gone. This would happen completey at random with no effect to the vehicle operation when normal driving. This pointed me in the direction of a electrical fault. I have a wiring diagram for the vehicle so a bit of looking up i found that the only thing related to all three lights was the earth header behind the glovebox to the left of the SLABS ECU. So the following day i pulled te glovebox out and got the torch in the hole and found that the earth point / header nut had come loose and was only hanging on by 1 thread. Tightened up the 10mm nut. put the dash back together, and now done 720miles with no lights. Cost = £0 just a little bit of time looking at the schematic and 15mins doing up a nut. Just remember its not always going to cost **** loads of money. Good luck:)

hi i had this fault now on my car 53plate for 6 months the fault comes on totaly random and when i take it to garage no codes come up on test eqpt,iv just bought a hawkeye,so wondering if its electrical fault ? can the hawkeye be left connected to car in live mode to see if it picks up any faults thanks.the shuttle valve has been replaced but did not cure problem,it may just be me but i think it does it more when the road is wet....

Had exactly the same problem as chrisjc. No fault logged.
In my case, the lights only came on when turning left @ low speed, like turning into a side road or dropping off a kerb.
Lights went off if I stopped the engine & re-started.
After 2 months of this, I got p*ssed off.
So, on the main road, with no traffic about, hammered it up to a left turn junction, slammed the brakes on & yanked it into the turning. Sure enough Christmas arrived - lights on.
Plugged Nanocom in & yippee - fault logged!
Front O/S ABS intermittent signal.
Jacked it up but couldn't feel any play in the bearing.
However, as I regularly do a run from Inverness to Cheltenham, I didn't want to be caught out,it's passed the 100k miles. Got a new hub (Allparts) & got it fitted by a local garage for £50.
3 months on & I've had no lights.

yes mine go out when i switch engine off and on may do same as you hamer it to get them to come on and plug in the hawkeye while they are still lit many thanks.i have lived with it but its now starting to p... me off.
