disco wont go over 50mph !!!!!

hi guys got another problem my 300tdi... it wont go over 50mph and takes all day getting there it appears to be getting boost (checked and measured 1.0bar) the turbo seems to be working as all the boost hose's are in good condition and expand when reved removed the top boost hose and felt pressure coming out of the intercooler changed the fuel filter and replaced the lift pump (only because i had a new filter/lift pump at hand) was told that somestimes the bottom crank pully can become loose and retard the timing so checked the pully bolt and all was VERY tight running out of patience and dont know where or what else to check so hoping someone on here can HELP!!!!! thanks chris

Hi Chris, the first thing I would check is the fuel sedimenter. This is a filter-sized device located on the rear drivers side chassis rail in front of the back wheel.

It will need taking off and cleaning. To remove it you need to undo one long bolt on the top of the unit - this holds the bowl in place. After you have the bolt undone, sometimes the bowl sticks on it's rubber seal, so use something gentle like a rubber mallet to break the grip of the seal.

When you do so, there will be about half a litre of fuel dying to just jump onto your face so be ready with a catch tank (I use an ice cream box). Once off you'll almost certainly find alsorts of gunge and debris in there.

Clean thoroughly, refit and I bet/hope she'll fly again

hi dave cleaned the sedimenter yesterday and to be fair it was not that dirty about 3-4mm of grit/sand in the bottom and unfortunatley didnt make any difference to the performance of my tdi think im gonna have to give in on this one and give it to a land rover specialist to check thanks chris.

Ok Chris, just one last quick thing before you give in and take it to a garage.

The link betwen the turbo and the intercooler is done with a rubber elbow, a straight piece of metal pipe and another short rubber section.

Sometimes, the inside of these rubber hoses can delaminate and cause a blockage reducing the effectiveness of the turbo. It's very quick and easy to just undo the elbow one in particular and inspect the inside - if it doesn't look properly solid this could be the cause of the problem as it's a know issue.
