Just driving home, and the radio kept cutting in and out-then the srs light came on briefly-then smoke poured from the window switches and cuddy box-hand brake now feels notchy and odd.
Presumably the hand brake cable has acted as an earth and cooked up-possibly burnt thru.
Which earth lead is normally the root cause for this please

I had this i'd forgeten to refit the earth and the starter motor, so it used the handbrake cable to earth. Struggled to get the hand brake off, and had to replave the cable as it had melted the plastic sleeve. Only tell i had was that it was slow to spin over, and had smoke coming from the same place as you

cheers Alex-it is a bit weird because it has been starting ok-but in the last day or so,radio has been cutting out-I guess some earth lead is corroded or fallen off. Will have to go in there tomorrow and sort it,plus of course sort out the handbrake.

Have a look at the earth point just behind the battery on the leading edge of the drivers side inner front wing.

Extra earths are pretty much an essential extra , battery to body , to engine block (around the AC comp or mount is good) and starter to chassis .

First Disco 1 I bought the guy (who ran an indy LR place down here) explained the dodgy looking bit of yellow&green cable was to stop the handbrake becoming the earth ....I nodded knowingly as I had told him I had worked LR garages in the past - but I hadnt got a clue , never worked on discos and had never heard of it before . He of course sussed me - never bull**** a bull****ter ! And I have put them on ever since !

Yeah,I'm gonna smother it in earth leads when I get to it-flushing central heating at mo-but the old bus is next on the list-should be raining by then -lol
Glad to hear your nice n chirpy again Shocker-that dust cart stuff was awful

THanks mate , it has taken me a while to get over it . Still havent had my contents payed out and the comp policy says they cover contents up to a given figure .

Sorry to hijack but interested me as my p38 burnt out on motorwas last weekend. Wondering if could have been a similar cause on mine. Alough had no problems previously

Well boys had a look at the battery to inner wing ground point as Big lad said and it was very rusty-tried to remove nut (to clean up) and it sheared off.So moved it along one to another bolt thru inner wing-got everything bright and shiny and refitted-also fitted a big spare earth lead I had from a fork lift between batt -ve and A/c pump mount as Shocker said. When its dry going to jump some extras from engine to body at random places-thanks for all the help as always.
