Disco Auto box question

I have a 1993 3.5 Efi Disco with an Auto box and have a quick question to reassure me.

What engine speed is 'normal' for the box to pull away in Drive? Mine sits around 2000rpm to pull reasonably, with about the next step being 2500rpm etc.

Also who exactly do you check the oil level? I assumed to do it in Neutral with engine running. It was low due to oil cooler leak and didn't read on dipstick at all, after adding 1 litre it now smears the lower part of the dipstick going past the max mark does this sound right?

your gearchange and operation sound normal

with the level, yes, engine running and in neutral but you'll have to wait a few mins after topping up to get an accurate reading as the ATF is still running down the tube and you need to let it settle

Auto box oil level needs to be checked when the engine is cold.

Hm ??? some discussion on hot or cold here who is right?
