Hi,

My disco 300tdi ES has air conditioning. At its best it wasn't very good and over the years I havnt used it. I have been thinking about getting rid of it but have been hesitant in getting out the spanners out as I know very little about it.
Anyone have any experiance of removing the aircon?
Any pointers on how to go about it?

I removed my aircon with the plan to fit a 2nd alternator where the pump was. It also made more space behind the grill for a winch as I took the compressor and rad out to!

I went to a local aircon place and the guy only charged me £10 to discharge the system of gas.

Well if you get to doing it write it up with pictures for me it's on my list of things to do as well :)

I'm going to get rid of mine because its in the way of one of the glow plugs and is another thing which could go wrong, oh yes an mine does not work either.

I pal of mine removed most of the aircon but left the compressor in place and now uses it as - well a compressor!! With the engine running, he can can pump up his tyres, operate the lockers etc.

Wonder how long it will last. Air con compressors have a lubricant in the sealed system. Obviously yu cannot introduce a lube into an air compressor..

Well no one has said it's complicated so I think I might stand a chance of getting it done.
Will write it up when I get round to doing it. Probably an Easter job.

why not just ad a oil feed to the intake and a separator to the output its pretty simple but some compressors lend them self better than others i had the one on my (cough)Jeep filling a small tank taken from a hgv braking system was great for lots of stuff

Hi Guys
You know the score - new Disco, new can of worms.
Amog the issues I will have to address on my just-bought 300ES is the aircon, or rather the lack of it. There is no drive belt for the aircon pump.
I am now deliberating whether to reinstate or dismantle. I have never had aircon on a vehicle before so wouldn't miss it, but as someone posted earlier in this thread, why have an ES model then disable the extra features?
I need to replace the main drive belt and tensioner as it squeaks, so I could put a drive belt on the aircon and see what happens.
But I do have a specific question. What is the function of the pulley shown and arrowed in the photo? The pump pulley seems to rotate OK, the tensioner seems smooth, but the one arrowed is well notchy; some bearing problem it feels like.
